The Magnavox Stereo Theater we had had tubes and had strong radiating oscillators on both AM and FM, probably because the leads were longer in the chassis than a solid state radio would have, and acted like a more efficient antenna.

If you're neighbor listened to weak FM signals, you might have been able to jam and capture them with your strong oscillator. That would buy you a period of peace and quiet! Probably those oscillators didn't meet Part 15 requirements, at least today. I heard that a receiver oscillator once caused a plane crash, from radiating interference in the Aircraft Band.

Is THAT where they got the idea for the 486-SX?

With as well heard as ckww is across metro Detroit during all hours, I have a hard time believing it's only running 500w. I don't listen regularly, but anytime I have it seems so strong that there'd have to be some serious dx going on to completely wipe it out. Not impossible, just impressive.

It's partly the low dial position, and partly the very good conductivity near the Detroit River. The pattern is the problem in many areas.

It helps that they are near the bottom of the band (ignoring ionospheric skip, longer wavelengths provide far longer distances that at the top of the band - since we can't swap out all the soil in Michigan for the soil in Saskatchewan, the only way to cover a large area by day is to use a low frequency).
Their endfire four-tower array concentrates its beam not only northeast, but at the horizon as well.

I'll take a guess that you're either near Lake St. Clair or in the Pointes.

Macomb County is very good for both CKWW 580 and CKLW 800.

I've pulled them in near Grand Blanc, in the middle of the afternoon.

Family Life radio would never be on a Canadian station, you may have heard a Family life station from another state on 580 I've been tuned to CKWW this morning and again this evening and they're still oldies.
No, my car radio was tuned to AM580 from the night before. It could have been some sort of feature. OR, CKWW was off the air for some short bit of time, and another distant station popped into the Detroit area. I listen to CKWW on a fairly regular basis. I work in Warren and drive on southbound I-75 through Detroit, and usually can hear CKWW, quite clearly.
Do you live near Heydenreich and Hall roads?
580+455=1035
WUFL is on 1030.
Many (used to be nearly all) AM receivers convert the signal to 455kHz and any further amplification is from that point.
No, I don't I live near Wyandotte, on the Detroit River, right across from the CKWW towers.
