A conviction of involuntary manslaughter is certainly better than nothing, but IMO he should've been convicted of second degree murder - or as an added charge - intent to do great bodily harm.

Based on the video everyone has seen, Bessner had no reason at all to fire the taser. He should've simply gotten the plate number off the ATV, run a LIEN system check, and then apprehended the vehicle and suspect later in the day or the following day at his place of residence for fleeing & alluding.

Grimes was not driving at a high rate of speed, and he was not a danger to other motorists or to the officers.

Common sense suggests firing a taser at an ATV motorist (or similarly, a motorcyclist) is going to cause said individual to lose control of the vehicle, fall off it, and incur life threatening injuries.

Agreed, MW, he got off easy here. If he didn't intend to severely injure or kill the victim then he clearly had no logic at all. The first thing he should have expected to happen was Grimes to fall off the vehicle.

Many are rationalizing that by saying that if he hadn’t been doing it in the first place it never would have happened and so the kid had it coming to him... the old Darwin Award theory...

He was clearly flying through stop signs while being chased... how can that possibly not be a danger to the public?

People in Detroit run through stop signs all the time; the penalty shouldn't be death by excessive force.

Holy crap! I just saw the video! That cop should be sued all the way to hell and rot in prison, along with all the cops that rendered no aid to the child.

The cop killed a child! HE KILLED A CHILD!!!

It was avoidable! If the cop hadn’t hit him with a taser, the child would still be alive!

No justice! No peace!

Not saying it should... I’m just saying you should find a different route than “he wasn’t a danger to the public”... he even looked like he was moving along pretty fast for the kind of vehicle he was on... was there even a plate on it?

Glad that I was never shot... The police used to chase me quite often, mostly when I was on a snowmobile.

Dad has three bullet holes in the deck lid of his Olds... Bloomfield Township fired on him but that was the late '50's.

Do you have a tendency to do stupid things in or on vehicles?

So children don’t have to stop doing things that are wrong? Maybe I should hire an 8 year old to rob a bank?

Don’t worry, a cop would kill the kid before he leaves the house.
