Here's my sample hour - appropriate for workday listening (13 songs total):

AC/DC - Whole Lotta Rosie
Bush - Comedown
Nirvana - Lake of Fire
Sponge - Molly (16 Candles)
Black Sabbath - Children of the Grave
Fastway - Say What You Will
Toadies - Possum Kingdom
Staind - Outside
Lynyrd Skynyrd - Simple Man
ZZ Top - Tush
Incubus - Stellar
Godsmack - Keep Away
Van Halen - Unchained

My hour blends the artists (Real) Wheels played with artists Millenials would consider classic rock.

At night (after 7p or 8p), I would open up the playlist considerably, featuring more 80's & 90's heavy metal bands, 90's & early 2K's nu metal bands, and catchy alternative hits from the 90's and early 2K's.

I'll offer a nighttime sample hour this evening.

HI. Millenial here.

I don't consider that "classic rock"

The Stones, The Doors, The Who, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith.

That is Classic Rock.

I cannot really argue your point, because I feel many share your opinion. That said - this station is positioning itself as the NEW Generation of Classic Rock.

If they aren't willing to stray from the traditional definition in a meaningful way, then how is their slogan representative of the station's sound?

MW you’re right, They need to Get away from the Traditional Classic Rock and be “The New Generation Of Classic Rock”.

I get the distinction but rock stations without currents come in a lot of different flavors. Looks like Wheelz is changing flavors even based on daypart. Not unusual, but the question of what is "classic" and what is modern-ish is more or less a question of what tests better.

Would it kill them to play some J Geils?

I never understood what happened to Sponge. They were all over Detroit radio in the 90s.

Forget Children of the Grave. Way too deep, and far too early. 1971.

That Fastway song falls in the "House of Hair" category.

Incubus seems to be bastardized outside of Drive and maybe Pardon Me. Doug Podell has an issue with them since they screwed him over at Riff and working with 89x.

Simple Man may also be too deep. Tertiary at best.

J Geils? ELP? WCSX has been lowering spins on those bands for a long time. Most Geils is the 80s stuff now. There's a reason for that.

So, you want to follow the same, extremely tired approach of playing only super high testing songs that have already been played to death? OK. Got it.

I suggest comparing the financial statements of Sirius XM to those of iHeartMedia when you have a chance so you can see firsthand how great the same, worn out thinking has been for terrestrial radio.

Also, I could not disagree with you more about "Simple Man" being "too" deep. Remember when Shinedown did a cover of that song? The COVER received a ton of airplay.

Younger generations find Black Sabbath cool, and they are still influential today, which is why they absolutely should be played on 106.7. Don't like Children of the Grave as a selection? I can accept that. Replace it with Paranoid. Or Sweet Leaf.

Incubus has some great early material from the late 90's. SXM plays it regularly. Pardon Me is a great song and is one that should absolutely receive airplay on a "New Generation" classic rock station.

From Wikipedia:
"Simple Man" is the last track on side one of Lynyrd Skynyrd's debut album (Pronounced 'Lĕh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd).

The song is one of Lynyrd Skynyrd's most popular songs. Since the song became available for digital download, it has become Lynyrd Skynyrd's third best-selling digital song after "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Free Bird". It has sold 1,333,000 copies in the U.S. as of November 2013.[1]

Go ahead and call WCSX and request anything outside of Paranoid. I'm nuts. Hell, play all of side one of Master of Reality!

And then, when we're playing Tubes deep cuts, and the ratings hang in the high 1's, we can complain that the station needs to go, and then when it does, complain that my genius plan of playing all of 2112 didn't work.

Speaking of covers, The Rockets version of Oh Well still gets the occasional spin. Why doesn't the Fleetwood Mac version get played? The cover version, played differently, by a different artist got airplay!

Shinedown (inexplicably) was hot on rock radio at the time. And that was also 15 years ago.

I've argued this plenty with program and music directors. I remember getting my ass chewed into for playing Red Barchetta. A car song. From Rush's arguably biggest album. During the dream cruise. Just because I think it's a good spin doesn't necessarily mean it IS a good spin. If it was, they'd be spinning it.

I'm not saying it's RIGHT or that I LIKE it, but that's the way it is.

I'm sorry. I thought we were talking about crafting a playlist for a NEW GENERATION classic rock station, not WCSX.

Korn--Twisted Transistor
STP--Wicked Garden

I LOVE THIS PLAYLIST, Windsor!!! :)

You actually used two of the songs I was going to use in my nighttime playlist - "Angry Chair" by Alice in Chains and Symphony of Destruction by "Megadeth."

I was going to also include titles by Tool, GNR, and Audioslave in my nighttime list, albeit different cuts. Nonetheless, the three tracks you selected were good ones!

You picked a phenomenal song from Faith No More. I remember hearing that one quite a bit on KLQ in Grand Rapids when it came out - around 1998, I want to say.

"Lit Up" by Buckcherry, "Mother" by Danzig, and "You Could Be Mine" by GNR are great songs that are highly recognizable that appeal to a fairly wide range of listeners. In fact, I've heard "Mother" on 106.7 already.

The only songs I would remove are the Halestorm and Korn tracks. Halestorm because it's a recent song, and the Korn track because I feel "Twisted Transistor" isn't that great of a song and has received far too much airplay on 89X over the last decade.

Thankyou MW, this is what Wheelz playlist should sound like for the New Gen of classic rock imho.I had to incorporate a real mix not just one genre for this to work.
