This is something new. Roop Raj interviewed Jessica's husband. Also, they released some cellphone video of Jessica that's pretty powerful.

HIPAA would prevent anyone other than the next of kin from legally divulging this information. I presume that's the husband.

The suicide prevention hotline is 1-800-273-8255. If you or anyone you know has become depressed or withdrawn, CALL. It is aggravating that the spotlight is being shone on the eye procedure and not the tragedy of suicide, which can often be prevented if the signs are recognized. It could have been ANY kind of botched surgery that could have led to this level of depression.

I can't find anything on his website that suggests that he even performs the LASIK Smile technique.

I was curious also.

From the beginning of refractive surgery, I was skeptical. Radial Keratotomy was developed by the Russians. The Russians were using it for their pilots. Talk about collusion, why was the Soviet Union willing to share this technology? I heard that the military thought it was a Soviet plot to blind American pilots. They didn't allow pilots to qualify visually that way.

The techniques have improved greatly. But all procedures are not safe.

But I really have to laugh at that spot where the guy buys a big screen TV so he can see it without glasses.

I really have to fault surgeons who target on air broadcast personnel and perform it for free in return for their on air promotion of the surgeons. Surgery websites are full of broadcast personnel that they did the procedures on. If owners were smart, they'd stop this practice, to limit potential liability. I think it is unethical.

Is THAT where they got the idea for the 486-SX?

I wonder if someone at channel 2 urged her to get this surgery. If so, they must be feeling really guilty!

Good question. I, too, would love to know the identity of the doctor that performed the surgery.

I guess the question is this - do the broadcasters who endorse such procedures (and other products / services) do so voluntarily, or are their arms twisted to do so by station management?

I completely disagree with the above statement. Dangers associated with elective eye surgery were very poorly publicized prior to this tragedy.

The fact a non-essential surgical procedure could lead to such dire consequences needs to be brought to everyone's attention.

I agree with that in principle; however when we are talking specifically about Jessica Starr, I wish the focus was on how she could have been helped after the eye procedure. Based on the video diary entries and how her family described her, it was OBVIOUS that she was suffering mentally as well as physically. The procedure isn't what killed her, although it clearly was a contributing factor to her depression. I refuse to believe that her life was no longer worth living. When suicide can be prevented, it should be. If we were talking about people who are still alive and suffering from these procedures, then concentrating on the procedure (along with other unnecessary procedures gone wrong) would be the proper focus. That's my take.

Such a terrible tragedy.
I had lasik several years ago with no complications. It was a paid endorsement, but at no time was I badgered into getting it, the decision was completely mine. Of the people I know whom have also had lasik for barter, no one was forced.
I saw the clips of Jessica's husband. My heart breaks for him and I pray he finds the strength to overcome this tragedy in time.
