Re: Bomb Cyclone Storm headed for us
I never heard of this weather term before.....and naming winter storms after people, before is was just naming hurricanes.....Just to build up the hype, keep the masses tuned in?
Perhaps these storms could get corporate sponsors and money goes to victims for rebuilds......

Re: Bomb Cyclone Storm headed for us
Bombogenesis means a cyclone (low) , the pressure falls 24 millibars or more in a 24 hour period.
In other words, the low pressure is rapidly intensifying.
There is a large temperature contrast across Canada and United States,
and the low bombing out, resulting in a steep pressure gradient, along
with strong cold air advection will result with wind gusts 45-55 mph.'
The low is forecast to be 980mb over northern Michigan and eastern UP.
980mb is 28.94 inches. Average pressure for the earth is 1013.25mb or 29.92 inches.

Re: Bomb Cyclone Storm headed for us
If that barometer reading is indeed achieved, this storm will have the same strength as a typical category 1 hurricane!
Very worried about power outages in SE Michigan come Sunday.

Re: Bomb Cyclone Storm headed for us
this looks like a classic, if particularly strong Albuquerque Low... Coloradans know (and dread) these because of the strong winds they bring and all the snow they can dump on the region. This one looks to undergo explosive strengthening, similar to a hurricane ("bombogenesis") as well...
the next couple of days are gonna be interesting...

Not only does the Weather Channel try to get a ratings bump like they do for hurricanes by naming winter storms they also try to pick dumb names that are not common to help. It's all about ratings and eyeballs.

If this weather event occurs, the TV weather reports could herald the forecast by playing the Gap Band's hit,"You Dropped The Bomb On Me ."

Over here in Ontario they said to expect 110 km/h wind gusts which is a little over 60 mph.

Good luck with it, Marcus.
I'm glad we have a guy checking in on our house while we're away.
I don't mean to brag, but I just put a puzzle together in 1 day and the box said 2-4 years.
Re: Bomb Cyclone Storm headed for us
In northern Michigan they are forecasting 40-60mph winds. I have been a weather enthusiast for years and never heard the term "Bomb Cyclone" before. Sounds significant! Also up here there is a BLIZZARD WARNING. I think this event will result in power outages and down trees. The NWS Gaylord says "Travel will be very dangerous to impossible by Sunday afternoon".
