If they do choose to flip to something new, the top prospects are as follows:
- Soft Rhythmic AC, similar to 94.7 The Wave in Los Angeles, perhaps with a resurrection of the V98.7 branding,
- Classic Rock (likely under the "Wheelz" name) or Variety Rock (like 100.7 KFM-BFM in San Diego),
- a Variety Hits format centered on the 90's & 00's,
- a Newsradio 950 simulcast

I hope some of Amp's on-air personalities are offered jobs elsewhere within the company. Crappy ratings aside, the station did have some talented jocks. I actually kinda liked the new morning show.

For a major market - where format choices are generally stable - Detroit sure has seen a significant number of format changes on the FM dial over the past decade.

93.1
98.7
100.3
102.7
105.1
106.7
107.5

...have all flipped. Some of the above stations have flipped 2 or more times within the past 10 years. There also have been significant playlist shifts at 88.7, 92.3, 96.3 and 104.3.

And all of the above is even before one considers all of the new translator signals that have appeared on the FM dial!
I'm thinking soft AC is the best choice of the bunch. AMP was the female friendly format in the bunch. Anything else stands the chance of cannibalizing the other stations. Does Entercom do simulcasts? How are they with rock formats that don't include Imagine Dragons?

I've listened to more of 98.7 tonight since they were WLLZ.

WOMC will not go 100% Christmas this year. Doesn't want to fragment ratings with WNIC. Doing too well at #1 or #2. WWJ AM and WWJ FM would be #1, though I don't know how much advertising revenue it could get with the simulcast. How is WBBM doing revenue wise?
There's more to the story when it comes to Newsradio 780's simulcast.
A competing owner in the Chicago market had a rocker that was in competition with CBS's rocker (this was before Entercom bought CBS), so the competing owner flipped one of their FMs to news.
Of course, listeners will always leave an AM station if there's an FM of the same format, so CBS flipped one of their FMs to WBBM simulcast. The other group successfully shook loose CBS's rock competition.

Someone touched on it above, but they could be reformatting the CHR format under another brand. This is just too knee jerk. Especially considering what MW said above about the hires.

It really doesn’t matter about the new hires in today’s business world radio or non-radio jobs you just simply adapt and you have to do more than One persons job especially in radio look at the voice tracking situation one person is Voice Tracking for multiple stations so I don’t think the new hire thing matters.

I'm not touching the Wheelz format. I don't think enough people remember wheels from 30 years ago unless they do a classic format. But I just don't see it happening. I wish they'd done the Alt format before 106.7! I'd love to have rock on 98.7 again!!!

Another possibility that we are overlooking AAA format WXRT in Chicago also owned by Entercom

AAA doesn't work too well here. I'd almost bank on soft AC.

Are we SURE they're flipping? Still talk about AMP being Christmas. I think it might just be a rebranding. Whatever. Two months without bullshit like Ariana Grande is fine.

They just aired a VO that mentioned Amp "went a little crazy". Maybe a throwback to just doing Christmas music weekends only?

Doesn't have the feel of a permanent format change - yet.

How are they with rock formats that don't include Imagine Dragons?
KQRC in Kansas City gets massive numbers, but they've been around forever. They are almost like Kansas City's version of WRIF from a heritage standpoint.

KISW in Seattle - phenomenal station. Another station that's been around forever. Successfully reshaped itself in the post-Stern era (Stern did very well there). Their ratings actually increased!

WAAF in Boston - abortion. Terrible signal. Bad engineering decisions. Equally poor programming decisions in recent years.

98 Rock in Sacramento - another solid station.

I am not as familiar with their Classic Rock stations. I know they own one in Portland (92.3 FM) and an extremely successful one in Denver (98.9 The Mountain, I believe).

If 98.7 goes rock, it won't be headbanging new rock. That market segment is well served by WRIF and 89X.

Soft Rhythmic AC would help Entercom tap into 25-54 females and would also help it tap into the Urban audience. By the way, 99.5 WYCD earns terrific ratings among females 25-54.

Speaking for myself, I definitely am NOT sure they are flipping. Rebranding and sticking with CHR would not be the worse move, especially if the station were to include more Rhythmic catalog tracks in its playlist.
