Family Life Radio Billboards

Post by Deleted User 16144 » Wed Nov 29, 2023 1:36 pm

Today, I happened to catch a digital billboard advertising Family Life Radio 93.1. This was on Westbound Hall Road just before Van Dyke in Utica. Has anyone else seen other billboards for Family Life Radio in the Detroit area?

Doesn't that seem to concentrate on areas they already served near Sterling Heights on 1030, rather than the Metro as a whole that 93.1 serves?

They should be concentrating on areas like Downtown Detroit, Downriver and the Westside. I’m amazed that their station in Midland 99.7 has an incredible coverage area. I travel from Rochester to Frankenmuth/ Birch Run 2 times a week and I start to receive 99.7 just around the Holly area . 93.1 and 99.7 overlap from Holly to about Burton.

They came close to having 99.5. Once as Hoker was trying to stay afloat and again while it was in receivership. They ended up getting a pile of money to permit 99.5 to go non-directional.

has to be Van Buren. No billboards in Canton along 275,
would think that was a zoning thing as freeway was being proposed/built

as soon as you are south of van born.... BAM, the billboards are plentiful

As WQDC 99.7 and WABX 99.5, both were once owned by the Mid States Broadcasting Network, later known as Panax. WQDC was on the Dow Chemical property at the Eastern edge of Midland. WABX was on a building in Downtown Detroit. Both have been at three locations over the years. WQDC/WSVC/WUGN is one continuously licensed facility, though it had long silent periods in the early years.

99.5 was also WCAR-FM licensed to Pontiac before 1960. I believe 99.5 was dark for 4 years before 1960 as well, I think 1956 -1960.

I called Dale Bickel at the FCC to see if History Cards existed for long ago cancelled facilities. He said some of the cancelled facility History Cards were thrown out because there wasn't enough room tp keep them all. Even if the previous frequency and or the same facility was used, the cancelled station cards were thrown out. This was true with a lot of the early TV and FM facilities that went off the air, and some AMs, many in the early days of AM, FM, and TV. I think the WCAR-FM facility on 99.5 license in Pontiac was turned in, so there probably isn't a History Card. The TL was probably on or near the WCAR 1130 Pontiac facility near Square Lake and Telegraph.

Thanks for the info. 98.7 was also considered to be an Ann Arbor station before 1960. Anything on that, I believe it was WPAG-FM and in 1961 became WBFG.

One source to look at, are the yearbooks such as the Broadcasting Yearbook, Telecasting Yearbook, Radio Annual, Television Factbook, and others on worldradiohistory.com, compiled by early 1960s WCCW 1310 alumnus David Gleason, who parlayed a Spanish Language Public Service/Public Affairs program there into owning and or managing many stations throughout North America, Central America and South America.

By year, you can reconstruct the information on studio and transmitter locations, power, antenna height, formats, owners and managers of each station by year, into something resembling the History Cards.
