Correct. WPON was focused on Pontiac and Oakland County. The station played music, sort of a unique blend of AC/MOR, and R&B at times. There was a news department, with local news. Studios were in the Riker Building, Pontiac's only skyscraper. Around 1980 or so, WPON flipped to country, as "Oakland Country 1460". The station had a good sound, lots of promotion, but that's as far as things went. I don't recall what year the transmitter site was sold, '83 or '84? The station should have rebuilt on industrial land in Pontiac. There's no shortage of that.

WPON History Card.

http://licensing.fcc.gov/cgi-bin/prod/c ... r_id=66233

WPON was originally owned by James Gerity, of WNEM-TV, WNEM-FM, and WABJ fame.

WPON focused on Oakland County Days, and Pontiac at Night.

New Authorization For WPON - December 26, 2019

I don't know what this license is for exactly, but did anyone notice this on it:

"This license expires 3:00 a.m. local time, March 08, 2020."

That's just over 2 months from now!

I noticed that WPON had applied for renewal of their station license. I also noticed the early expiration date. The reason for that is not known at this time.

It's for a Method of Moments Proof of Performance and an STA for temporary operation of the new facilities. It demonstrates nothing as far as signal performance over the area, from what I can see.

From what I can remember and the few pieces of old documentation that were still in files 20 years ago:

WPON's studios were originally in the Waldron Hotel on Perry Street in downtown Pontiac. The move to the Riker Building was sometime between 1969-1970.

The studios moved to 1011 W. Huron outside the Pontiac city limits in 1979, now occupied by Huttenlocher Group Insurance.

The studio moved to 2222 W. Franklin, Bloomfield Hills in 1985. This location was mere yards away from the tower array, but not for long. The application to move the TX site to the Benstein Road location was filed in 1988. The property that the towers were built on was leased for 20 years.

The station was sold by Dr. Subczynski and Mr. Zaparackas to Sima Birach in 2003.

When I worked at the Franklin Road studio in the late 90's, most of the equipment was cobbled together from leftovers from through the years, supplemented with a few off-the rack CD players and turntables. The on-air board was an old Auditronics unit with a stack of ITC cart machines. A bunch of non-functioning equipment (RTR decks) sat in the racks, including an old CBS Volumax I would have loved to get my hands on. I found boxes of promo 45's and LP's from both the "Oakland Country" period and from when the station ran MOR, many of them marked "NO BB (big band) SATURDAY PLAY".

I think you're right as the only application listed that hasn't been "granted" yet is this one:

Description: OPERATION REQUESTED

"APPLICANT HAS COMPLETED A MOMENT METHOD PROOF OF PERFORMANCE AND IS IN THE PROCESS OF COMPLETING THE LICENSE TO COVER APPLICATION. APPLICANT REQUESTS FULL POWER OPERATION AT THE MODELED PARAMETERS PENDING SUBMISSION OF THE APPLICATION. APPLICANT CERTIFIES THAT REFERENCE POINT MEASUREMENTS WERE TAKEN AND ARE WITHIN THE AUTHORIZED VALUES. ATTACHED ARE THE WPON(AM) MOMENT METHOD DAY AND NIGHT ARRAY PARAMETER SHEETS."

https://licensing.fcc.gov/cgi-bin/ws.ex ... _num=22045

It should be noted that within this request (that hasn't yet been granted) they are requesting full power operation. Given this specific wording they might not be at full power yet. Time will tell.

I haven't checked WCXI in a long time, but this morning, the signal is significantly stronger than when I last checked in January.

It's now tunable indoors pretty easily at my house (14 Mile & Woodward area). Still noticeable fuzz, though. Signal stength is a bit better than 990 and 1090 in my location, probably on par to a little weaker than 800, and still much weaker than 760, 910, 950, 1030, 1310 and 1500.

My guess is WCXI is broadcasting at maybe 25% of CP power?

WPON remains faint but is a little better than it was in January. The station has been granted its License from its new Walled Lake site. So, the current state of affairs is probably as good as it's gonna get. Wow, GIGANTIC downgrade compared to the prior site a few miles farther east. The daytime signal used to be rock solid in Troy and the western parts of Sterling Heights and Warren. Now, I can barely hear the damn station despite now living eight miles farther west.

They are authorized to operate at 250 watts nondirectional.

If they were doing directional proofs of performance in the classic way, they would be permitted to operate with 3750 watts nondirectional while testing during Daylight hours.

They were definitely using more than 250 watts today. They are either doing proofs or broadcasting illegally.

Here at Telegraph & Quarton, WPON is much louder and clearer than WCXI.

As for the guys doing the oldies shows on WPON, some classes at Specs would not be a waste of their time.
