I remember the sound of the station in the 90s like it was yesterday.
The 70s tunes were very very limited. Never going pasto 74.
The main focus was the 60s. Not just 67 thru 69.
It was a great mix of the entire decade. They however always had this "classic rock" lean that annoyed me.

Now when it came to the 2000s, there was a definite focus on 67-79 as you stated, but not before 2000.
But still obviously playing a lot of music from 60-66.

In fact, up until the 2013 playlist change Christmas stunt, they were still playing music as old as 1960 and as new as 1989.
2014 is when they dropped music before 65
And even then a couple older than 65 like “Stand By Me” by Ben E. King slipped in especially during the instant request lunch...

Lol, JJ used to get so fed up with me trying to request early 60s music everyday.
He finally told me no more 60s at all by mid 2017
Susan Cruise would play anything I asked, no matter what year it was from though. I always told her to be careful not to get in trouble but she said she wasn't afraid.
She even would fit my random song requests in when she filled in for other shifts 😮 :lol

...maybe that's why she doesn't work there anymore

It seems WOMC is experimenting with early 90s music again.
I just saw "Man On The Moon" by REM (1992) and "Barely Breathing" by Duncan Sheik (1996) in the playlist history for the last couple hours.

"King of Wishful Thinking" by Go West (1989) was in there too, but they have already been playing that for years... but it was released in 1989, then was a hit in 1990. So I don't know if i would consider that "90s"

Here are a very small select few to experiment with that I feel fit with the current station sound:

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Under The Bridge
REM - Losing My Religion
Ace Of Base - The Sign
Tom Cochrane - Life Is A Highway
No Doubt - Don't Speak
Billy Joel - The River Of Dreams
Londonbeat - I've Been Thinking About You
Melissa Etheridge - I'm The Only One
Eric Clapton - Change The World
Del Amitri - Roll To Me
Wilson Phillips - Hold On
Hootie and The Blowfish - "I Go Blind" or "Only Wanna Be With You" or "Hold My Hand"
Haddaway - What Is Love
The B52s - Roam
Tina Turner - I Don't Wanna Fight

The issue before was the addition of songs that didn't fit with the older music, such as "Bitter Sweet Symphony" by The Verve and "1979" by The Smashing Pumpkins.
The ratings suffered very badly and this is why.

The objective is to make the playlist fit. You don't want certain songs to stand out as "1990s music".
The ones I selected will gel right in with the older stuff.

Half of what you selected was in the 2017 iteration of their 90’s music...

They are slowly increasing 90s music.
I think they are moving WAY too fast.
They only added 80's music in 2010. now 6 years later all these 90s songs, even some from the 2000's.
Why the rush to add the 90s, and rid of the 60s?
Clearly there is an audience still, based on the high number of 60's songs requested during the noon and 5 pm request hours.

Sheryl Crow - All I Wanna Do (1994)
Hootie and The Blowfish - Only Wanna Be With You (1995)
Eric Clapton - Change The World (1996)
Blues Traveler - Run Around (1995)
Smash Mouth - I'm A Believer (2001)
Bon Jovi - It's My Life (2000)
Aerosmith - I Don't Wanna Miss A Thing (1998)
Sheryl Crow - The First Cut Is The Deepest (2004)
Elton John - The One (1992)
Seal - Kiss From A Rose (1994)
Elton John and George Michael - Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me (1991)
Wilson Phillips - Hold On (1990)
Tina Turner - I Don't Wanna Fight (1993)

There may be others
Eric Clapton, Elton John and Aerosmith were classic rock staples even 20 years ago. They just had longer careers that included big hits later on. 1998 Aerosmith had the same lineup as Dream On/walk This Way" era 'Smith, just a fresher sound. Clapton and John progressed and kept the hits coming. Same artists. Tina Turner found a lot of solo success in the 80s-but she got her name recognition and original success much earlier with Ike, so she was already a big-name performer by the 70s. Im willing to let those artists slide due to the fact they were 1960s/70s artists originally. Smash Mouth has a lot of 60s influence. But they dont belong. Seal and Blues Traveler are not 70s acts no matter how big an influence true "classic rock" was to them.

Elton, Clapton, Aerosmith, etc. Are still releasing new albums and I have to admit they are not bad!

Radio today doesn't want anyhing to do with anything that isn't Ariana Grande or Taylor Swift though...

Oh forgot about "Friday I'm In Love" by The Cure.
That could actually almost 100 percent pass for a mid 80s song to a gullible audience, lol.

In fact.. a LOT of early 90s music is often mistaken for 80s music.
One song I did a lot of research on is "I Will Always Love You" by Whitney Houston.
Despite her cover being obviously recorded for the 1992 movie "The Bodyguard", a H*** majority of general public think this is an 80's song.

EDIT:
Another good choice is "I Can't Dance" by Genesis (1991)

You’re talking WOMC, right??? In what way, exactly, were the ratings hurt? This station has been in the top 5 for quite a while... I do not believe it’s a ratings thing. However, yes they did dump the 90’s...

Around the end of 2017, they started to lose listeners to WNIC, who beat them for more than just one month... something that had not happened in a long time.

The only logical thing to do was "reformat"
So they dropped the 90s music, added back the older music that was dropped, and immediately they shot up to above a 7 share.

I mean WOMC didn't even add 80s music until 2010...

But it won't hurt to try again, but slower this time.
