Because Avila deigns to talk to feed his fragile ego by talking to him, Ron, ever so predictable, has become a total shill for the organEYEzation - “as Sid would say.” In response to concerns that, with Franklin Perez, the centerpiece of the deal, once again on the IL, Avila may have been hosed in the Verlander trade, he lamely says that the Tigers wouldn’t be winning even if JV were still on the team.

I have a question to the readers of this thread, if you think Ron is such a buffon why do you listen to his show?

Really there's 2 reasons: Every so often there's an interesting guest that makes that hour decent. Also I like hearing peoples opinions and debating them if I think they are off base. He's off base enough and fiery enough to fight his point so it's entertaining.

Me? I’ve long been fascinated by con men. Throw in Ron’s staggering narcissism and I’m hooked.

Con man might be a stretch because I think he cons himself 9/10.

The years-long fiction of the “insurance company” callers - along with the back story Ron assiduously employed for them - certainly qualified as a con. As did, for a time, the use of a younger Alex as a phony caller. Sometime they would try to make it appear that Alex was actually calling from parts unknown; other times, they didn’t even bother with the pretense as it was clear “caller Alex” was speaking to him in person. I remember once this use of Alex engendering a sort of nervous, complicit laughter from then-in-studio guest Mark Wilson.

Considering he's been apart of the show for awhile now that must've been a long time ago, but still wild to think that he would make up Alex as a caller and he was there already

Also speaking of Ron and Alex, what would happen if Ron couldnt do the show? Would he ever let Alex do it or is Ron that stubborn?

As befitting a wholly hollow, ungenerous person, Ron would only let Alex sit in for him if his palm was greased.

That's awful to say but probably true. I'd listen just to see how the old callers try and talk about the past with someone who can't be over 30

Cameron lacks the personality and intelligence to be a con man. He cons himself into believing everyone sucks but his few "buddies," none of whom even deigns to help Ron .

Happy early b’day, Cowboy! I don’t have to tell you, of all people, all the notables with whom you share your big day. To answer your question, Ron is shilling for this iteration of the Tigers because, unlike Dombrowski, Avila pays lip service to him (& I think he even guested on his show once). That’s really all it takes. He didn’t get from DD the respect he believes he’s entitled &, as I’ve pointed out in these pages, he reflexively opposed the team during his regime. Surely you remember all the trashing he’s given Kirk Gibson through the years? Then, last year, their paths happened to cross at the stadium &, probably more instinctively than personal, Gibson greeted him as “buddy.” All at once, per Ron, Kirk was a changed man. The trashing of him came to an end. Yes, Ron’s that transparent. If - and only if - you play ball with him, you’re aces.
