Ron Cameron
Re: Ron Cameron
This article from the Detroit News says that Frank Beckmann "launched "Sportswrap," Detroit’s first sports talk show, in 1981."
Oh no he didn't. Ron Cameron started his sports talk show before that.

Re: Ron Cameron
I have it on good authority that, pen in hand, Ron is currently writing his letter to the editor demanding a retraction. If he can’t find a stamp, he’ll send a telegram instead.Bobbert wrote: ↑Wed Mar 24, 2021 3:39 pmThis article from the Detroit News says that Frank Beckmann "launched "Sportswrap," Detroit’s first sports talk show, in 1981."

Re: Ron Cameron
Maybe someone should check on when the Dave Diles sports call in show started on radio, had to be in the 70's
Re: Ron Cameron
I did send an e-mail to the News asking for a correction. Be interesting to see if they acknowledge it.Momo wrote: ↑Wed Mar 24, 2021 4:32 pmI have it on good authority that, pen in hand, Ron is currently writing his letter to the editor demanding a retraction. The best scenario would be for Ron to get the impression that one of his least favorite people in broadcasting—Frank Beckmann—tried to take credit for starting sports talk radio in Detroit. The explosion of anger would probably blow out the microphone at the radio station.
Re: Ron Cameron
I know Ron frequently talks about the length of his sports talk show hosting career - 51 years, which seems greatly inflated because it includes his 1970 start with Norm Plumer, where Plumer - not Ron, a mere sidekick, at best - was the host (& did Ron even have his own show before circa 1977?) - but has he also claimed to be Detroit’s first?
Re: Ron Cameron
I checked the Detroit Free Press archives on Newspapers.com and found some things:
Detroit Free Press, April 5, 1967
Dave Diles of WXYZ is readying a new sports show which will include a segment in which listeners can telephone questions and comments.
Detroit Free Press, May 21, 1967
BY JUDD ARNETT (columnist)
A FEW EVENINGS ago your commentator made an appearance on the "Dave Diles Show," this being a radio program over WXYZ in which the listener is invited to call up and ask embarrassing questions.
Detroit Free Press, February 2, 1969
A reference to WXYZ's "Dial Dave Diles the Show That Listens To You" at 6:40 p.m.
Re: Ron Cameron
Will Mark from Warren ask again about when Mark Wilson will be returning to the show? And does Ron have a backup, non-“Cova,” reason for Mark Wilson’s failure to appear once we return to a post-Covid world? Or, as in the case of his explanation for Gutterball Tony’s prolonged absence, will Ron just casually settle on Mark is "dead," & quickly change the subject?
