I have it on good authority that, pen in hand, Ron is currently writing his letter to the editor demanding a retraction. If he can’t find a stamp, he’ll send a telegram instead.

I did send an e-mail to the News asking for a correction. Be interesting to see if they acknowledge it.

The best scenario would be for Ron to get the impression that one of his least favorite people in broadcasting—Frank Beckmann—tried to take credit for starting sports talk radio in Detroit. The explosion of anger would probably blow out the microphone at the radio station.

Dial Dave Diles on WXYZ-AM was on in 1968 and maybe even sooner than that.

I know Ron frequently talks about the length of his sports talk show hosting career - 51 years, which seems greatly inflated because it includes his 1970 start with Norm Plumer, where Plumer - not Ron, a mere sidekick, at best - was the host (& did Ron even have his own show before circa 1977?) - but has he also claimed to be Detroit’s first?

I checked the Detroit Free Press archives on Newspapers.com and found some things:
