Duplicate Television Sub-Channels in Detroit
Duplicate Television Sub-Channels in Detroit
Is there a reason why we now have duplicate subs on broadcast television in Detroit. Here’s a list of duplicates and even a triplet,
Court TV Mystery = 20.3, 31.4
Grit = 31.3, 38.2
QVC over the air = 31.5, 38.4
HSN= 20.4, 31.6 and 38.7
Is this something that will eventually get worked out?

Re: Duplicate Television Sub-Channels in Detroit
Scripps bought Ion, largely for the purpose of moving expanding its subchannel empire. It also allowed Scripps to provide ATSC 3.0 to the Detroit market.
WPXD is actually transmitted from WXYZ's RF25 transmitter. WMYD's content is on the same transmitter, though it shows as 20-1 on TV sets.
The actual WMYD transmitter is on RF31. It is also an ATSC 3.0 station. Ordinary DTV sets and converter boxes cannot receive ATSC 3.0 stations, as the modulation systems are vastly different.
All of the major network stations are hosted on the WMYD transmitter (I'm curious as to how Scripps is able to broadcast competitors' content on the WMYD transmitter).

Scripps made deals with the competitors
2 broadcasts 20.3's ATSC 1.0 signal, in exchange they get to utilize the 3.0 space
4 broadcasts 20.2 in 1.0 and they get some 3.0 space
50 was originally going to broadcast 7.3, so that RF25 could carry 20.1, but that was deemed unnecessary. Yet 62 (50's sister station) still gets FREE 3.0 space

Re: Duplicate Television Sub-Channels in Detroit
I get what you’re stating, but why duplicate programming? And why 3 of the same HSN?
Re: Duplicate Television Sub-Channels in Detroit
HSN is probably leaving WPXD soon, as will QVC probably. Those WPXD subs will probably be replaced by Doozy and Defy, and QVC will probably be moved to 20.2. As for QVC and HSN on WADL, those channels pay their affiliates big bucks, that's why there are duplicates in so many markets
The Katz duplicates are there in preparation of 7 and 20 probably removing them during the ATSC 3.0 shenanigans

Re: Duplicate Television Sub-Channels in Detroit
I imagine some of these stations will be dropping the channels once their contract is up, especially those that the Ion stations recently picked up.
