How Do I Get Rid of This?

Post by Turkeytop » Fri Jan 12, 2024 9:32 pm

I have this warning that has popped up on my compuer screen and I don't know how to get rid of it.

Your browser was logged from Russia

Your PC may be at risk

It obstructs part of the screen, Sometimes it covers up a button I need to click on.

If I click anywhere on the message it just opens up a whole new page.

Sometimes the warning will go away, only to be immediately replaced by another equally dire warning.

Your PC may have viruses. Click the button to scan your PC

Someone is downloading files from your computer
Russians have hacked your computer.

How can I get it off my screen?

I started out with nothing and I still have most of it.

Do not do anything else with that. Do not click anymore on anything!
Clicking on that screen is a bad thing to do. It will just generate more dire "Warning" screens and possibly trigger a demand for a "ransom" of some sort (payable in BitCoin or convenience store generic cash cards). Absolutely don't click the button to Scan your PC.

Quit/Exit the browser or use Task Manager to force quit it.
Power off and restart the PC. Sometimes, that takes care of it.
If that does take care of it, then, before doing anything else, reset all your passwords and enable 2-factor authentication on sites that offer that option.
If the problem reoccurs, shut off the PC, get it to a service shop. It is possible your drive may need to be reformatted (erased), or, replaced.. Hopefully you've followed Best Practices and have a backup drive with a pre-malware data backup, to restore things to as they were.
Others here may have different, possibly better advice!

It may be as simple as a browser hijacker that simply needs to have the browser cache/cookies cleared and browser extensions reviewed and malicious ones disabled/removed.

You seem to have a browser hijacker.

Don't reboot - that may give true malware a chance to dig its hooks deeper into your computer.

Close the browser. Run Windows Defender (already on your computer) and run a Full Scan, fixing anything it finds. If nothing is found...

Install MalwareBytes Trial using another browser or computer to download it from here:

When installing, de-select any add-ons.

Once running, update and run it.

Unfortunately it's hard trying to help a technophobic like Turkey. I can think of a couple different things I would do right away if I could get to the command prompt. But how the heck do you explain even how to get to it, let alone what to input?

Fixed.

Not because I figured it out. I just bumbled onto it.

You also might install Malware Bytes as suggested. Better yet, throw away the Microsoft PC and buy a Mac.

Maybe you should stick to sociology. His problem has nothing to do with Windows.

TT - if disabling Chrome notifications fixed it, then I suspect what you have is "allowed" sites in your site notification settings that shouldn't be there (this is the single most common problem I have come into my doors as a tech person). If you go into Chrome's settings, type "notification" in the search bar, scroll down to the PERMISSIONS section and click NOTIFICATIONS, you'll get to a page that has allowed and not allowed sites. If there were any sites you wanted to actually send you legit notifications (like say facebook or your email or something like that) then they can be put in the allowed list. Otherwise, outright disabling them all as you have done works fine too.

You do not have a virus. You're fine.

Now, just stay away from those Russian porn sites. You may get many viruses that you can’t get rid of.
