CRT and Plasma vs LCD tv's/monitors

Not very knowledgeable about TVs. We're looking into getting a new TV and the 8k I saw at best buy looked great. Is the tech too new on the 8k TVs to buy one? I am comfortable with paying a premium if the TV will be high quality for the next five years and if I can make it our downstairs TV about five later and move it up north in about 10 years.

The tech isn't all that new; the problem is a sheer lack of native 8K content. (I am unsure how well upconverted 1080p or 4K content looks on an 8K panel.)

There also comes a point where the "law of diminishing returns" sets in, where finer detail is almost imperceptible to the human eye.

I think manufacturers have come to the realization that 4K is the sweet spot. The value proposition for 8K just isn't there. I'd even go so far as to say such a purchase would be a waste of money by the consumer.

I'd go 4K OLED, unless your viewing location is a bright room, in which case you may want a QLED (make sure you get one with good reflection handling if viewing from a bright room).

I'll also note every single TV with a total score of 85 or better from Consumer Reports is an OLED made by Samsung, LG or Sony. Not all OLEDs from these companies scored 85 or better, however.

The highest rated non-OLED sets were the QN90 and QN85 from Samsung (each scored at 81).

The LG OLEDs are very nice - no doubt.

Out of curiosity, what considerations persuaded you to choose the LG models over the equivalent Sony models?

Edit - re-reading BMW's post reminded me that Samsung is now in the OLED game, too! I was previously unaware of that fact. One of the popular TV review YouTubers (the Stop the FOMO channel) really likes the Samsung. The pedestal that attaches to the unit looks a bit unattractive to my eyes, though.

I do generally like the Tizen smart TV interface on the Samsung products. I will say deleting OTA channels used to be a pain in the ass, but that's not as difficult as it once was following recent software updates.

Samsung doesn't have Dolby vision - so they're out
Sony is significantly more expensive than the LG...... it may be better, but it isn't THAT much $$ better (to me)

also wanting to get a G3 this year because the G4 next year won't have a 3.0 ATSC tuner

The G3 is a phenomenal set, per everything I've read and seen. If the comparable Sony model is more expensive, going with the G3 definitely is a very prudent decision, in my opinion.

How about for a 24 inch set? 65 is too big. I am in an apartment, and can't hang anything on the walls.

It's not worth spending money on a big name brand for a screen size that small. I'd go 32" if you have a table / stand capable of supporting that screen size.

Best Buy is selling multiple 24" and 32" sets for under $100 right now.
