On my windows 10 laptop, I suddenly no longer have Word. It's been replaced with something called Wordpad. It leaves me unable to open up documents I have already created in Word.

What's up?

My first thought is Word is still on your computer. But the desktop icon is gone.
Do you know how to navigate My Computer and get to your program files?

Or you're trying to open a text document that isn't a Word file. That would explain why you're seeing WordPad.

Those are my two guesses.

The word icon on the desktop has been replaced by the wordpad icon. I have word documents that I created when I had word and now I can't open them.

Someone told me that maybe Windows sent me an update I hadn't asked for.

I'm thinking a Windows update isn't going to affect Word. WordPad is a word processor that comes with the Windows operating system. Word is a program the operating system can run for you.

I'm not saying you're wrong. But it would be the first time I've heard of a Windows update removing program files that are not bundled with the operating system.

I'm sure you're right. This is all way over my head. I may have to get help from one of my sons.

Word is probably still listed in your start menu programs. Windows Update wouldn't automatically remove Microsoft Word.

The Office 2019 that came with the computer expired. Had to purchase Office 2022 and download it for $169.00.

I don't believe there is a 2022. You probably got 2021.
Which version did you get?
Office Home and Student? Office Home and Office? Office Professional?
Office for Working Class?

Home and Student.

I wouldn't have had a problem working with wordpad but I was unable to open any of my existing word documents.

There is a program called NeatOffice that you can download for free if you lost Word, Excel, or Powerpoint. It can read Word files, but it has a slightly different look and feel.

Right-click on the document, select "Open With", then select Word.

I still can't shag the feeling Turkey could of continued to use the older version. Just have to find it and create another desktop icon.

A Windows update removing a program that's not bundled in Windows seems odd to me. Suppose we'll never know since he did upgrade Office.

Wonder if, as soon as he upgraded, Voila, there's all his old files magically migrated into the new Office?

Someone did suggest that to me. But when I clicked on "Open With", Word was not on the list of options.

The files never went away. I just couldn't open them.

The main problem with Windows 10 is Windows 11. Microsoft does not want to support 10 anymore. They just want you to buy 11.
