Lloyd Dobyns Jr., an award-winning NBC News correspondent who reported from places around the world and who anchored an innovative U.S. television newscast in the early 1980s, has died, his family said. He was 85.

I remember “NBC News Overnight” (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NBC_News_Overnight) as being not your father's newscast. Free wheeling and often irreverent, it blended nicely with "Late Night with David Letterman" as it's lead-in. Between the two it seemed as though they were both predicated on the idea that the suits were asleep and the equipment was still warm and powered up so why not do something interesting. Dobyns sort of took the role as the seasoned newsman (he was) to Linda Ellerbee's brassy agent provocateur and it worked beautifully. And so it goes...
