Newsnet?

Post by km1125 » Fri May 20, 2022 4:48 pm

Stumbled across Newsnet a couple days ago (3.9 WHNE in Detroit market) and was surprised to see JILL WASHBURN at the desk doing the news!! Not sure how long she's been there, but I've watched the channel before and never noticed her there. She's not a lot better than any of the other on-air talent there - well, except for the sports guy... not sure how he's on the air at all. Drives me crazy every time I hear him come on and start a story. Almost like someone's doing an audio caricature of Dick Vitale.

I did not realize that Newsnet was based in Cadillac, MI, at least according to their wiki page. Anyone know how or why that happened??

Well, it has been a channel on Charter / Sputum TVC head-end under several different monikers over the years... there are a few nuggets of info right here in the NMI forum (the survivors of 'data loss' or 'trimming') going back ~3 years...

Google or DDG should allow you to piece most of the rest of the answer together...

I'm not certain of all the facts and the timeline, but I believe the young Mr. Wotila was the son of a prominent attorney in Cadillac who probably at least helped finance the budding venture as a low power OTA station and as the public airwaves became increasingly deregulated and digitized. Local advertising and commercial production would follow. It grew from there. One has to admire the young man's dedication and tenacity.

Maybe some of the recent activity is due to an influx of capital?

TV commercials got pricier, so the billionaire founder of 5-Hour Energy bought his own channel

I can't read the article since I'm not a subscriber. I assume Mr. Wotila sold a 90% interest to Mr. Bhargava, or else Bhargava saw an opportunity to buy a 90% interest in Wotila's small station and expand the enterprise into a nation-wide network a la Ted Turner. :?:

A couple of days ago, I googled NewsNet to see what it's all about. There is a Wikipedia page on it that actually gives some good info:

Looks like NewsNet is moving to Farmington Hills:
NEWSnet recently began construction of additional studios in Farmington Hills, Michigan, with plans to significantly expand its news team.

I cannot help but wonder if they are moving to the Farmington Hills office/flex space that iHeartRadio is vacating?

I haven't seen anything but the Crain's article, and they don't like it if you copy/paste their content, so paraphrased summaries have to do.

It appears former Brewvine & 10 Meteorologist Austin Lowe recently jumped ship to Newsnet...

I'm not a fan of the new graphics. Far too much italicized text.

What news are they going to have that the other stations don't?
