Takes Place In Detroit

Post by sfpcc1 » Mon Nov 22, 2021 7:08 pm

This TV season there is something interesting going on; There are three network shows that takes place in Detroit, Bob (Hearts) Abishola (CBS), The Big Leap (Fox) and The Reboot of The 4400 (CW). Also they are all on Monday night. Has anyone else noticed this? I know these shows are not shot in Detroit but in large shows are largely shot in only four different locations: LA, New York, Vancouver, Toronto.

The 1st show listed (Bob...) is the only one listed I've seen, and like it. Did not know it was write-set in Detroit... could be Drew Carey's back yard in Cleveland, for all I've seen of it.

If expanded to 'Takes Place in Michigan', the new MTV series "Mayor of Kingstown" on Paramount is set in a made-up Michigan town of (you guessed it) Kingstown, but the actual locations are in Ontario, sort of near Taronna (Kingston, & Brantford).

The first couple of episodes of "Bob" (CBS) had characters riding in subways. By about the 3rd episode, they had switched to buses.

Bob, (1992,1993) Like the Bob Newhart Show took place in Chicago. Part of their EL system is underground so in a way that city has a bus and subway system. (My mother is from Chicago and I'm
a TV nerd.)

Bob Newhart's other two shows took place in New England. (Newhart / Vermont, George And Leo / Martha Vineyard ? I'm not 100 percent sure.)

There is a show called American Auto that sneak peaks on NBC December 13 about the Auto Industry.
I'm assuming it takes place in Detroit. It a comedy done by Justin Spitzer who also did Superstore.

Thoughts on "American Auto?"
New NBC sitcom from "Superstore" creators. "Takes Place in Detroit" with "Payne Motors" as a car company run by a bunch of clueless idiots. I loved the executive conference room, where the views of "Detroit" seen through the H*** windows showed all those hills and mountains that are part of our local terrain. If one looked carefully, the "Holllywood" sign could be seen fuzzy in the distance. A reporter in a press conference scene had a "Local4" mike flag. A TV talk show's backdrop had a downtown view with the Ren Cen, HQ of General Motors. Some clever quips and rejoinders, but overall, I hope future episodes are better than this pilot, otherwise I see it having a very short run.

That Joe Pera TTY doesn't take place in Detroit has likely contributed to the longevity of the show.

Good as they may be, many shows - or sitcoms - premised in Detroit don't seem to last very long.

Main exception to Detroit comedy show longevity runs about 1/6 of the year @ Ford Field (and the other 1/6 as Visitors).

I also wasn't knocked out by the first two episodes but the Payne Ponderosa is a funny name for a bad car. A lot of it seemed a little to labored.

The New CBS Medical show Good Sam also takes place in Michigan. In the opening scene a patient says he wants to go to Alaska on a cruise. The lead character, Sam Griffith replies, "Why that is even colder the Michigan!" Soon after her father gets shot and goes into a coma for 6 months.
