WSJ: Trump Attacks Harris’s Identity, Saying He Didn’t Know She Was Black

Post by Matt » Wed Jul 31, 2024 4:59 pm

I'm having trouble unlocking this article, but here are some lowlights:
CHICAGO—Former President Donald Trump attacked Vice President Kamala Harris over her race, baselessly suggesting his election rival only began identifying as a Black woman in recent years.

“I didn’t know she was Black until a number of years ago when she happened to turn Black and now she wants to be known as Black,” Trump said Wednesday at the National Association of Black Journalists’ annual convention. “So I don’t know, is she Indian, or is she Black?”

He continued: “I respect either one but she obviously doesn’t because she was Indian all the way and then all of a sudden she made a turn and she became a Black person. And I think somebody should look into that, too.”

...

Trump’s comments came in real-time as White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre was holding the daily press briefing. “What he just said, what you just read out to me, is repulsive, is insulting,” Jean-Pierre said.

“No one has any right to tell someone who they are, how they identify,” added Jean-Pierre. “She is the vice president of the United States. We have to put some respect on her name, period.”

...

The tone of the Q&A was contentious from the start. Scott, the senior congressional reporter for ABC, started by asking Trump why Black voters should back him given his prior incendiary comments on race and gender, including falsely claiming former President Barack Obama wasn’t born in the U.S. and treating Black journalists with hostility.

Not that this is going to change anyone's mind, but it is important to illustrate what an overt racist Trump is.

It might sway some independents away from him. The ABC journalist asked a legitimate question and instead of turning lemons into lemonade and making a pitch they could take to their audiences he sat there and attacked her as a person.

Trump has dog bull horned before… but he’s never been this overtly calling out someone’s racial identity. This was a bad move. I really think we are seeing the early signs of a complete implosion of Trumpism.

A sign of how bad it was… his handlers yanked him before the promised hour was up right in the middle of a question being asked about Project 2025. Chris Lacivita is supposed to be a seasoned professional and his resume says on paper he should be. Turns out he’s an amateur that got lucky a few times in his career or something. Because by any objective measure this is a joke.

Being asked by a Fox News host!!!!! She was setting him up to disavow Project 2025, and they yanked the chain. THAT'S how bad it was..

He literally said “she turned Black”. WTF?
They/them, non-binary and proud.

I finally got around to watching about the first 10 minutes of questions, and, I'm not gonna sugar-coat it. That was rough. Also, defining a "black job" as "any job"?

I really for the life of me don't understand why he didn't stick with his "unity" message that he promised before the convention, and even stuck to for the first 20 minutes of his acceptance speech at the RNC, and then, it was like somebody flipped a switch. He gave up on that message after 20 minutes and never returned to it.

And today he was woefully unprepared for what he should have know would be a relatively hostile environment for him. Shouldn't have been that difficult to go in there with a message and use the questions to pivot to it. Instead, the first thing he pivoted to was the southern border - not something that audience was particularly interested in.

This is the real question. He can do this shit till the cows come home and all he does is alienate regular decent people. I think the newness of his tantrums, his meanness is under whelming many people. We are back to the 37% like him as is, and he has to earn the rest.

For Kristian Trumpers are not serving our Lord Christ, but their own appetites. By smooth talk and flattery they deceive the minds of naive people.

Because he’s undergoing the same kind of utter implosion that the lions did in the NFC Championship game… get to the third quarter, get cocky and collapse. He isn’t capable of the kind of discipline you want to see in your post. It’s not physically possible.

You couldn't have thought of another analogy?

The author is correct in that Rachel Scott wanted more than anything her "pound of flesh." But after that, to ignore the reality that Trump didn't handle it well, at all...
