Hot mics are the best mics

Post by Lester The Nightfly » Fri Mar 08, 2024 12:38 pm

In the exchange, Bennet congratulates Biden on his speech and urges the president to keep pressing Netanyahu on growing humanitarian concerns in Gaza. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg were also part of the brief conversation.

Biden then responds using Netanyahu’s nickname, saying, “I told him, Bibi, and don’t repeat this, but you and I are going to have a ‘come to Jesus’ meeting.”

An aide to the president standing nearby then speaks quietly into the president’s ear, appearing to alert Biden that microphones remained on as he worked the room.

“I’m on a hot mic here,” Biden says after being alerted. “Good. That’s good.”

Slick move. Note to Bibi: You really want to fuck with the guy that gave that speech last night?

Last night's speech won't move the needle so much as one tick. People on the left will be happy because Biden showed signs of left. People on the right will call it a shouting diatribe from an old man. People in the middle don't care.

And that's where you are wrong. He needs to shore up his base and some of that low approval is due to Democrats not being enthused with him. it's not just a pile of Republicans and Independents. That speech absolutely moved the needle with those Democrats and gave them hope that he's up to this. I wouldn't be surprised if he hits the mid to upper 40's... That's how many disaffected Democrats there are. If he keeps that level of speaking up while Trump rambles Trump is a goner. They can't hit him on policy very well... the age/dimentia thing was just dealt a major blow and the corruption thing died already. The GOP has had a bad month or so. Now we see the polls tightening or even shifting towards Biden potentially... predicting Biden is DONE... not one of your finest moves.

Now hold on just a damn minute here. What exactly are you proposing the United States should be doing over there? You were 100% behind Biden pulling us out of Afghanistan. Now you want us to get more involved in Israel's conflict?

Tightening the screws on Bibi who isn't even popular in Israel... You can take him down a peg or two without troops.

We'll see. His approval has been stuck in a narrow slowly falling wedge for over 13 months now. I seriously doubt that last night's speech is the catalyst that pulls him out of that rut. He has plenty of time to show his normal self again (I do have to say there is something a bit odd about the variance in his energy level depending on the event - some times he's barely with it, and other times he's like, well, whatever last night was).

That's not normally something you do to an ally.

Your guy talks about that non-stop. Including letting Putin do whatever he wants if our ALLIES "don't pay their fair share". So I don't to hear how you don't do that. It's practically your guys slogan.

You didn't even watch the damn speech and it's getting rave reviews.... My god man at least watch the speech and know thy enemy... I watch lots of Trump speeches no matter how uncomfortable they make me for that reason and I watched the entirety of both his speech and the response. It was full of things the base wants to hear with an eye on shoring things up and it appeared to move the needle among folks who watched the speech. He made the Republicans look silly while he was giving the speech... drove Trump nuts while giving the speech and the GOP response flopped. This was a win all the way around for Biden.

I seriously doubt Les' comments were in the context of getting Israel to pay us for our support. Rather, I suspect he supports Palestine, and at a minimum, is indifferent to Hamas. Just my suspicion.

I'm saying Trumps entire pitch is to be this strong man that tells everybody else including other countries what to do. That's not a secret. So for you to complain when I suggest Biden might be ready to play a little hardball with Bibi is just absolutely laughable. It can't be ok when that literally is a key point of why one candidate is running and then not ok if the other guy dares to raise the possibility.

CNN poll of reaction to Biden's SOTU addresses:

2021 - 78% positive, 51% very positive
2022 - 71% positive, 41% very positive
2023 - 72% positive, 34% very positive
2024 - 64% positive, 35% very positive

So yeah, I wouldn't get TOO excited. Last night's numbers are still his lowest ever, other than a 1 percentage point bump in "very positive."

Looking back at RCP's approval average, he saw about a 1/2 point bump in approval in the weeks following his 2023 address (which again, scored even higher than this year's speech among viewers), and then it was all downhill from there.

So are you gonna take 68 minutes and watch the damn thing or not? You're also doing a great job of ignoring the last few polls with Biden ahead nationally... it's a start. It's also timed with Haley dropping out and her people having to choose.
