Democrats only need 4 votes to control congress...
The House failed to elect a new speaker on the first ballot Tuesday afternoon. Two-hundred House Republicans voted in favor of Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), the nominee, but this was 17 votes short of the majority needed to win the speakership. All Democrats voted for House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.).

Another day of GOP winning!
Jimbo had initially hoped he would pick up momentum on the second vote. Instead, the number of Republicans refusing to back him grew by two on Wednesday.

I think every Republican should for him or herself.

He was so honored it brought a tear to his eye.

I'll give MW credit, he's not running from the embarrassment like the other Republicans here seem to be.

Once again, the Democratic speaker candidate has lead every vote for weeks.
Thursday brought one of the most embarrassing episodes yet in the GOP’s arduous 16-day quest to find someone — anyone — who can get the votes to be House speaker. With the realization that that might not be possible at this juncture apparently setting in, Republicans set about forging a temporary fix that seemed potentially agreeable to much of the House: giving acting speaker pro tempore Patrick T. McHenry (R-N.C.) more power to conduct vital business while everyone figured out a longer-term solution.

GOP speaker-nominee Jim Jordan even endorsed the plan, apparently believing that time could heal the wounds suffered by his sputtering speaker bid and give him another shot later on.

Then the party summarily rejected Jordan’s leadership — again.

Jordan announced Thursday afternoon that the plan was no longer in the works.

Jordan has a snowballs chance in hell. This 3rd vote seems all so pointless. It was said yesterday he was suspending his bid but he's changed his mind.

Personally, I think most Speakers of the House are worth no more than this.

It is crazy how broken the GOP are. I will say I applaud those in the GOP who refused to vote for a January 6 insurrectionist.

I'm totally missing how they're blaming the Democrats on this one, what did they expect? This is their shat show, they created it. I'm not defending, I consider myself old school R, not a Trino.

As I sit here and try to figure out who ultimately is to blame for this disaster, I have settled on one specific thing: Kevin McCarthy's concession regarding allowing 1 single House member as opposed to a majority of the party to bring to the floor a motion to vacate. That is a concession he never should have made (he should have seen this scenario coming) and ultimately is what has led to the current situation.

He wanted the speakership THAT BAD and had to give the change to the FCer’s or there’d be no gavel and we’d be on ballot eleventy-billion from his election by now.

There is a qualified speaker candidate which remains.
