Migrant Child Labor in US factories

Post by TC Talks » Sat Sep 23, 2023 2:30 pm

I have raised this concern before (with no comments from conservatives). Finally the feds are getting involved.
Tyson Foods and Perdue Farms, which together produce a third of the poultry sold in the United States, are under federal investigation into whether they relied on migrant children to clean slaughterhouses, some of the most dangerous work in the country.

The Labor Department opened the inquiries after an article in The New York Times Magazine, published this past week, found migrant children working overnight shifts for contractors in the companies’ plants on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Children as young as 13 were using acid and pressure hoses to scour blood, grease and feathers from industrial machines.

Meat processing is among the nation’s most hazardous industries, and federal law bans minors from working in slaughterhouses because of the high risk of injury. The Times article focused on one child, Marcos Cux, whose arm was mangled in a conveyor belt last year as he sanitized a deboning area in the Perdue plant. He was in the eighth grade.

The investigations are a rare instance of two major consumer brands facing federal scrutiny over child labor. Many meat-processing companies outsource cleaning to sanitation firms, which technically employ the workers. After another Labor Department investigation recently found more than 100 children cleaning plants around the country, one firm, Packers Sanitation Services Inc., paid a $1.5 million fine. But the national corporations that benefited from the children’s work, including Tyson, did not come under investigation.

Seema Nanda, the Labor Department’s chief legal officer, said in an interview that the Biden administration is now examining whether large corporations can be considered employers even when children enter their factories through contractors.

Wait, are you saying the BIDEN ADMINISTRATION hasn't been doing it's job the last three years and solving this problem??

Maybe Joe could assign Kamala to get this fixed. She did such a great job on the border issue so far, right?

Is it migrant children, or illegal alien children, that are working in these factories?
New York and Chicago were all in with respect to their sanctuary status — until they were hit with the challenge of actually providing sanctuary. In other words, typical liberal hypocrisy.

Either way… business is IN LOVE with the idea. Businesses love to hire illegals because of the cheap labor, lack of benefits and their willingness to do jobs citizens are not as inclined to do. The illegals are essential to the functioning of the economy at this point. That’s at the root of the problem. It’s also why nothing gets done on immigration in large part.

"Migrant children".... :rollin
Can't bring yourself to say "Illegal Alien Children" pushed into forced labor by their parents or adults who brought them across the border...?

Do you think these children are being kept safe?

If only your outrage for abused dogs would extend to humans, you might be a decent person. I wonder where the Evangelicals are on this issue as well.

Fair question. Clearly the atheist liberals and their beloved King Joseph and Princess Kamala don't care. Otherwise they would do something about it.

My outrage is directed at the people directly responsible. Joe Biden and his Border Czar Kamala. Failing to enforce our border has not only led to this, but tens of thousands of fentanyl deaths per year. Ukrainian and Chinese bribes and money laundering aside, he should be impeached on those grounds alone.

So the same problem has existed for 4 administrations?

How about the business owners who are exploiting these kids. They should be castrated.

Are republicans responsible for the millions of gun deaths? According to you they should be.

What's occurring here is deeply troublesome, and employers who hire underaged children to perform inappropriate work absolutely should be fined heavily.

I also agree that the current administration has failed terribly at controlling illegal border crossings.

By the way, the news reports that were cited by TC Talks referred to the youths as "migrant children."

To fault him for the term the news organizations used is unfair and comes across as petty. Are the youths in question here illegally? Probably, but that's only supposition at this point. Criticizing the news organizations for failing to dig more deeply into that question is certainly fair game, of course.

If a LEGAL citizen did that to their kids (either one of those things) they'd be facing -at least- child endangerment charges from the government!!
