I think folks have discussed this before on Buzzboard. Maybe even I have said this. It's time to make sure a kid knows how to read, write and do math before they start learning something else. Even as basic as knowing how to spell a couple hundred words before they have to know if the word is a noun, pronoun, adjective, whatever.
It's nice to know all about the Roman Empire. Or how to program. But first make sure they can do long division without a calculator. See the point I'm trying to make. Just what should be taught in elementary?
