Too bad they don't have projections for Canada as well to compare. Per the IHME projections - Canada had somewhere between 2-3x actual infections compared to reported prior to Omicron, but they push that number up to 12x for Omicron. They estimate that anywhere from 0.5 to 2% of the population got infected with Omicron PER DAY over the past 2 months, with an average of about 1% per day. Translation - over half of all Canadians have probably already had Omicron.

While Canada being much more spread out no doubt played some role, I suspect the bigger factor in Canada's lower death toll is simply they had a higher proportion of Omicron to previous variants than we did in the US, and since Omicron is only 20% as deadly, these numbers make sense.

The elephant in the room that nobody in government seems to want to acknowledge (or at least not anything more than in an extremely timid fashion) is that Omicron was the saving grace of the pandemic. It should have been embraced as such once we had solid data (and interestingly enough, for Omicron even the earliest data we had from an extremely small sample size out of South Africa ended up being quite accurate).
