An American citizen taken hostage in Niger has been rescued as part of a U.S. military operation.

U.S. officials on Saturday confirmed that the early morning rescue by special operations forces took place in northern Nigeria, which borders Niger.

"This American citizen is safe and is now in the care of the U.S. Department of State. No U.S military personnel were injured during the operation," Pentagon spokesman Jonathan Hoffman said in a statement.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo lauded the mission and avowed the U.S. commitment to return Americans taken hostage while abroad.

"We delivered on that commitment late last night in Nigeria, where some of our bravest and most skilled warriors rescued a U.S. citizen after a group of armed men took him hostage across the border in Niger," Pompeo said in a statement.

In 2013 and 2014, Islamic State took dozens of Westerners hostage in Syria. The European hostages were eventually released after their governments made generous ransom payments. The American and British hostages, including the journalists James Foley and Steven J. Sotloff, were murdered.

Then comes Trump...

At least a dozen Americans have been freed, including three UCLA basketball players who were detained in China, and Caitlin Coleman, who was rescued along with her family after being held captive by the Taliban for five years.

Although many European countries routinely pay ransom when their citizens are taken hostage, the U.S. has a no-concessions policy, meaning that it does not negotiate with terrorist groups that take Americans hostage. Washington will engage with hostile governments that unjustly jail Americans, a kind of judicial hostage-taking. President Trump has taken a strong personal interest in both kinds of cases.

Families of American hostages say they are pleased with the responsiveness of the Trump administration.

$1.7 billion with $400 million of that being held until the release of American citizens. Paid in Francs and Euros.

Five administrations held on to the money because Iran actually OWED on terror related settlements. Sanctions against Iran were in full effect at the time of payment.

Obama paid a leading sponsor of state terrorism $1.7 billion... much of which is speculated to have gone to fund more terror activities.

The terror honcho Soulimani was so emboldened by the previous administration that he would travel freely around the middle east, even being so bold as to travel to Baghdad... where his people were actively engaged in terror activities.
