General consensus is that Scott Harris got played by the Dodgers and Yankees. The Yanks strung him along until finally pulling out due to medical concerns about Flaherty's back, and by then all other contenders had already made pitching deals, leaving Harris with no leverage and short on time.
Liranzo and Sweeney both are below-average defensively, and neither one is a strong hitter. Sweeney is a 24-year-old playing his first year at AAA, so you gotta hope he's a late bloomer. (As for the Baez comparisons, he might be better offensively right now, but he's notably worse defensively.) Liranzo is younger, but he's a switch-hitter who really struggles as a righty (and, jeez,
another catcher???).
So this makes two straight trade deadlines where Harris bungled away the Tigers' best trade chip, and got NOBODY who is capable of joining the major league lineup today. Just wholly unacceptable. I know Harris spoke yesterday and gave his usual pat answers, but at some point Chris Ilitch needs to show his face and explain why he's signing off on this crap.
Excellent analysis.
What do you wanna bet Lynn Henning pens an article for the Detroit News this week praising Liranzo and Sweeney and defending Harris?
As an aside, here is a stack ranking of 2024 payroll by team:
https://www.nbcbayarea.com/news/sports/ ... 024-season
DTE Energy paid $752 million in dividends to its shareholders last fiscal year. Remember that the next time they ask the MPSC to approve rate hikes.

I haven't gone looking for Henning's take, but Petzold in the Freep mentioned (albeit quite low in his story) how Liranzo "struggles with blocking and framing pitches but has a strong arm," and that Sweeney is "below-average" defensively. That was as negative as Petzold got. He quoted liberally from Harris' presser last night after the deadline passed, which of course was all gee-whiz peachy-keen stuff.
I listened briefly to Costa and Jansen on 97.1 this morning in the 9:00 hour and they were roasting Harris on a spit for how badly he handled the Flaherty situation. They did, however, give Harris props for the savvy Carson Kelly trade, getting two pieces in trade for a platoon catcher who was DFA'd less than a year ago. This will look even better if Dingler shows he's ready to contribute full-time.

Chase Lee (reliever acquired in the Chafin deal), Ricky Vanasco (starter acquired from Dodgers separately from the Flaherty deal) and Sweeney have all been assigned to Toledo. Also, I missed this from Sunday but seeing that Parker Meadows has begun a rehab assignment with Toledo, so barring any setback, he should be back up with the Tigers soon.

Three piss poor trades by this team. I am done....at least for this year. They turned their back on us.
They/them, non-binary and proud.
Remember that “2000 Mules” was concocted by a circus of elephants.
The right needs to stop worry about what’s between people’s legs. Instead, they should focus on what’s between their ears.
Audacity sucks.

I saw the Hens in Indy Tuesday night and Meadows played six innings in center. Unless there was a set back today, he should be back Thursday.
It was hard to watch the rest of the team. 4 charged errors, and that doesn’t include misjudging balls. Tork disappointed, Navigato booted a routine grounder at short, Jung misjudged a ball that ended up in left. Baddoo hit a homer though. Bullpen day, apparently mirroring the Tigers.
I haven’t heard if Baez is back Thursday or not. Meadows would fill Canha’s spot on the roster and Baez would send Kreidler back to Toledo, giving us the all star two headed monster of Madris and Urshela (or Ibanez) at first.
No idea who fills Chafin and Flaherty’s spots.

I still don't get why Vilade was sent down in favor of Madris.

Madris bats lefty, and the Tigers are overloaded with right-handed hitters right now. They needed some balance on the bench. They're both OF/1B types, so they opted to bring up the left-handed bat.

Tigers traded for a 27 year old minor league pitcher from Toronto for the infamous Cash Considerations. Over 8 ERA and 14HRs allowed in 46 innings for Buffalo. He'll report to Toledo. Sounds like a winner to me. Well done Harris.

I've been watching the Locked On Tigers podcast. On Wednesday's show, the host's concluding comments (and body language) perfectly summed up the general feeling about this team:

All along the icy wastes, there are faces smiling in the gloom.

Baez back, Meadows still rehabbing in Indianapolis.
Hanifee (who I forgot was with the Tigers briefly last year) and Guenther up. Both are relievers.
Montero starting.

Kansas City got three in the first.
Detroit had one run off a sacrifice fly.
Royals 7, Tigers 1.

With the Tigers being sellers at the trade deadline and the AL central being a tough division this year, it would not surprise me if the Tigers fail to amass 70+ wins on the season.

Montero wasn’t bad after the first three batters. Hanifee on the other hand was extremely hittable, even with outs and foul balls.
Skubal tonight. Saturday and Sunday are TBD. I would assume one will be Sammons, the other a bullpen day.
Attendance will continue to suffer on non Skubal days.
