Kudos to him for putting his family first.

His lengthy absence last season was ostensibly to save his marriage. Yes, kudos.

I feel like Scott Harris was in a no-win situation regarding E-Rod. There were three potential scenarios for E-Rod, and none of them were optimal:

1) Keep E-Rod and get nothing for him (knowing that he's probably opting out after this season barring a total implosion);
2) Try to trade him to a team on E-Rod's no-trade list, running the risk of the player vetoing the trade (which is what happened); or
3) Trade the player elsewhere just for the sake of trading him, trying to get some younger assets for a guy who's leaving (and we'd all complain that Harris got fleeced because he had to take a lesser deal just to send him out of town).

So we're left hoping E-Rod doesn't opt out, and he still remains a serviceable starter for at least another couple years (for which Harris said "sign me up for that"). And if the Tigers continue to struggle, maybe he can become trade bait again in '24 or '25.

Detroit's becoming the poster child for difficult baseball contracts.

First, Cabrera's contract, which should have ended long ago and which has seriously hurt the development of this team.

Now, E-Rod's contract, with its load of conditions.

It is now known he would've accepted a trade to the Dodgers had they extended his current contract through 2024 for $20 million. Remarkably, they didn't bite, which is bizarre if the $20 million number is accurate.

He had no backups to the trade proposed that E Rod declined due to the no trade clause. A good GM has a plan B.

Michael Lorenzen is on an expiring contract, in essence a half-season rental for whatever team traded for him. It was actually his second appearance for the Phillies, but his first at home. It must've been quite the thrill for Phillies fans and him alike!

Note that not since his rookie season in 2015 and until this season, Lorenzen hadn't pitched over 100 innings. He may indeed be a late bloomer at 31.
