I remember how he wouldn't shut up as the San Francisco earthquake was occurring during a World Series pregame segment when the Giants faced the A's. He literally had no idea what was occurring. He stuck to his prepared remarks regarding the upcoming game.

Al Michaels literally had to shout over him!

McCarver stunk as a broadcaster.

Ironically that's how he was able to get his ass into the Baseball Hall of Fame. As a broadcaster, not a player. In my humble opinion he didn't excel at either.

McCarver was actually decent in the 80's at ABC because it was a three-man booth then with Al Michaels and Jim Palmer. Michaels kept the broadcast flowing, having his cut his teeth dealing with Howard Cosell blathering while openly drunk on the air earlier in the 80s, and Palmer had plenty to say as well, so McCarver had to keep his commentary concise compared to later on.

When things went to shit was when CBS got the MLB contract starting in 1990. CBS tried to make the color man in a two man booth the star of its MLB broadcasts like John Madden was for NFL and McCarver was free to run amok. When Fox took over most of MLB in 1996 it was even worse because he was paired with Joe Buck, who was like 14 years old at the time.

He did a great job calling the 1991 and 92 World Series, Deion excluded.
