The Jewish Resource Center is not pressing charges, saying the religion is based in forgiveness. Good for them, especially if there is not a direct threat to life. It's quite generous of the center and reflects positively on their lived values. But that doesn't absolve the university for action. And it's quite odd on a campus like Michigan and in a community like Ann Arbor that this wouldn't get more attention as an example and point of learning given the rise of antisemitism in our country.

It's good that the university has held the students involved accountable and has denounced the act of hate speech.

Still would love to know why channel 62 changed its report on the matter. Did someone twist their arm? Internal decision solely?

Student disciplinary records aside, the media have every right to disclose the identity of the perpetrators of a crime. The fact an alleged criminal is a college student does not shield such (alleged) perpetrator from ID disclosure.

There was a traffic and firearm possession incident involving a football player late last year (Mazi Smith) that was very widely reported. His name was very broadly communicated in news reports.

When swastikas are placed on Jewish houses of worship or cultural centers, the media often cover the story extensively. Seems like the U-M athletic department is being given preferential treatment here.

It's not as black and white as you are making it out to be. The individual that was unethically named is just a regular student now and, unless I've missed it, no criminal charges have been filed. How were the identities discovered? Was it U-M cameras? Was it the result of a U-M DPSS investigation?

Don’t want to be named? Don’t act like a hoodlum and spray paint things that don’t belong to you. If this was an MSU student you’d be asking what they are hiding if they didn’t say his name. Instead you’re finding what little defensible position the kid has and latching on. How classy.

Ugh, this has NOTHING to do with sports. An individual (or two) made a major, despicable mistake. The rest of the world has no fucking business in determining the academic future of the individual(s) involved.

And it wouldn’t… but being a student somewhere doesn’t give anybody a pass from it being reported. If it did then everybody should get a pass because everybody has a role doing something somewhere that could be at stake. Singling out this one thing as ostensibly off limits for coverage is patently absurd.

If they had a detail wrong, they didn’t want to be on the hook for libel.
