He's been enabled in many ways:

• That long-term contract that burdened the Tigers with a lot of unproductive debt. Contrast the Tigers with the Cardinals, who knew when to let go of Albert Pujols and continued winning.

• Tigers on-field management, which has had a hard time motivating him to stay in shape and sometimes even to hustle to first base.

• The hero-worshiping media. Memo to Jim Price: The Big Man hasn't been the Big Man since about 2016.

If the Tigers had been more responsible, he would have been guaranteed a contract only through his age 35 year. But no, they had to give him a lifetime contract.
