Maple Leafs fire coach Mike Babcock

The struggling Toronto Maple Leafs have fired head coach Mike Babcock.
Leafs president Brendan Shanahan announced Wednesday that Babcock had been relieved of his duties, and that AHL Toronto Marlies coach Sheldon Keefe has been named the club's new head coach

Somebody will pick him up, he may take it easy the rest of the year but he'll be coaching somewhere next season.

I just find it funny that Shanahan was playing for Babcock years ago, but now is in the position to fire him. Wonder what their relationship was like back then?

Was surprised to learn of the news.
I am no Mike Babcock fan, but the Leafs had a damn good regular season last year and lost in 7 games in the playoffs to the team that ultimately represented the Eastern Conference in the Stanley Cup Finals.
Shanahan must've felt that if he waited much longer (say, another month), the season might become too difficult to salvage. He evidently didn't want to take that chance.

The Leafs are getting desperate. They know if they don't turn it around soon, they'll be getting kicked out of the Original Six.

I thought hockey player were tough... mentally as well as physically.

It looks like he's found his next coaching gig with the Columbus Blue Jackets.
