Can anyone believe this??? he still has a year and a half till his current is up and chris Illitch gives him an extension. Really??? :barf

What justifies this????

Sad day for Tiger fan's, he should have been shown the door after this season imo.

Avila's an easy punching bag right now, but Jim Callis, an MLB.com writer who used to work for Baseball America, thinks the Tigers’ system is as strong as it’s been in the last 40 years. "This," he noted, "might be the best their farm system has been since they had Trammell and Whitaker and Morris."

Best farm teams means nothing... Free agency and trades unfortunately is more important, and he's failed at both.. nobody hangs banners for best minor league players..

Tell that to Theo Epstein and the 2016 Cubs. Quite a bit of that WS team was homegrown.

Point taken, but a strong farm system is often a key component to later major league success, as it was in the Tigers’ case leading up to their last World Series-winning team. I remember 10 years ago reading that the Royals, with their-then top-rated farm system, would be the team of this decade. And they did later win a championship. The Astros’ success, too, was built on their excellent farm system. Most successful rebuilds are started in the farm system, so there’s at least reason for some optimism that respected outside observers are high on what they’re seeing in our minor league system.

Please don't compare Theo to Avila.. that's laughable..
Avila is banking everything on mize.. we'll see, but this rebuild could last 5 or 6 more years...

Theo’s rebuild with the Cubs started in 2011 and didn’t start to pay off until 2015. Rebuilds take time when done right.

I think it's pretty simple.. Avila is doing exactly what Chris Ilitch wants him to do. Chris isn't as passionate for baseball as the old man was, and he's going to get the budget balanced on this team no matter how long it takes or how much we hate it. Avila is his man.

How passionate was the old man? He didn’t care about his team for years. It took being embarrassed in 2003 to spend any money.

I really wish we knew the story of the Jeckyl & Hyde Ilitch years, for sure.
