Vinyl outsells CD's for first time in 35 years

Post by bmw » Sat Mar 11, 2023 9:35 am

2022 numbers:
Vinyl: 41.3 million units (up from 40.0 million units in 2021)
CD: 33.4 million units (down from 46.7 million units in 2021)

That is a 28% drop in CD sales and a 3% increase in vinyl. Even cassette tapes saw an increase from 343,000 to 440,000 units

As far as revenue:
$13 billion for streaming
$1.2 billion for vinyl
$495 million for downloads
$483 million for CD's

So at the end of the day, the vast majority of revenue comes from streaming.

I have three turntables I can't recall if I still have a CD player. I ripped all my stuff in 2005

OK, I'll play...

Why do you need 3 turntables?

I don't need three.. I have a Techniques 1200SL I bought and refurbished from one of the stations I was at. I have a simple Crosby portable that was abandoned by my daughter when she left for college. Finally, I picked up a console stereo from a neighbor as he was heading for the assisted living center with a Magnavox turntable. I've retrofitted a Bluetooth input and updated the speakers, but will run vinyl every once in a while on the old girl.

Then, there is this stupidity coming in at $275,000

Now that one's a shocker.

I haven't looked to buy any cassettes in many, many years, but I'm surprised they still sell that many.

I just ran across some old new-in-wrapping Maxell UDXL-II ones in the basement. I'll have to check on ebay how much they're going for!!

I've always had a hobby of collecting vinyl and CDs and tapes. It's the only thing I'm good at. It does drive me nuts that, in the 90s and early 00s, I could walk out of a record store with a stack of albums (some good titles to boot) for a cup of coffee. Now? I saw a copy of Revolver that must have been a cat toy being sold for $5. Same thing with tapes. I couldn't give them away 10 years ago.

I switched collecting vinyl to bourbon and it has paid off...
