Most Unusual Tracks From Mainstream Top 40 Artists

Crazy Horses-The Osmonds, 1972. Not a big hit in Detroit due to its anti-automobile theme.

Electric Stories-The Four Seasons, 1968. Top 10 Hit in Western Michigan. Still on WGVU playlist. Lots of near Psychedelic, fuzzed Electric Guitar, possibly done by the late great underrated session guitarist/sitarist Vinnie Bell.

After Johnny Cash released Hurt, originally done by Nine Inch Nails, nothing seems that weird anymore. He really made it his own.

On Youtube you can find a live cover of Husker Du's New Day Rising by Robert Palmer.

Quite unusual.

From The Osmonds "Crazy Horses" 1972 album, the other 45 single "Hold Her Tight" another great song!! Back in the Spring of 1979, The Osmonds (minus Donny) released the album "Steppin' Out" on Mercury Records. I was listening on WTAC (600 AM in Flint) & DJ Fred "Boogie" Bryan played the title track & he said "I think that people are going to get that album". It failed to chart & they went to country in 1981 (same for Marie)!!

The late watery guitarist Vincent Bell also played on the lates Ferrante & Teicher instrumental "Midnight Cowboy" (# 10 in January 1970) BUT also did Bob Dylan's "Lay Lady Lay" (went to # 99 in late March of 1970).

Marie wasn't an unknown quantity at Country prior to that, as her version of "Paper Roses" hit #1 in 1973 (and I believe she is still the youngest performer, or at least the youngest female, with a #1 Country hit). Curiously it hit #5 Pop, which was the same peak reached by Anita Bryant with the original version in 1960.

I don't know if Disturbed ever made top 40, but if they did then their Sound of Silence track should qualify.

Their song Blue Collar has that same loose jazzy feel.

Does anyone out there remember Alice Cooper's New Wave Phase? (roughly 1979/1983):

Special Forces
Flush The Fashion
Zipper Catches Skin
Dada

"Clones (We're All)" went to # 40 (1 week) in May of 1980 (which I heard on 96 WHNN FM when it was a rock station & AM 600 WTAC when it also was a rock station) & a music video which I saw from NBC failed variety series "Pink Lady (Japan female duo) & Jeff" in late 1979. I also heard "Who Do We Think We Are" on IDEAL radio WIDL (104.9 FM) in the Summer of 1981!! The late maestro Dick Wagner (The Frost) plays guitar on "Dada" but the album failed on radio in late 1983. 105 FM WWCK played 4 tracks from "Dada" on "New Music Thursday" at 12 Midnight with DJ Stu (Stew) Schadder way back then.
