Max Crook, who invented the “Musitron” by extensively modifying an electric organ, has passed away, July 1, 2020.
It was famously played by Max in the 1961 hit song “Runaway” by Del Shannon. Shannon, born Charles Westover, from Coopersville in West Michigan, met up with Max Crook at Western Michigan University. Crook had lived in Ann Arbor, and they were “discovered" by WHRV Ann Arbor DJ/Record Producer/Record Entrepreneur Ollie McLaughlin. Del Shannon gave song cowriting credit for “Runaway” to Crook for his Keyboard Solo and arrangement in “Runaway”.
He needs to be added to that Michigan shirt for sure, if he’s not on there already!
