Hey, some of us like to talk about happenings in other areas of the country, too. Here's the place to do it.

Happening at 3pm (Pacific) today, just over 20 minutes from now.

Might WWJ-FM be next in line for 98.7?

At this point, I think it’s inevitable that 98.7 will flip to WWJ-FM at some point in 2022. The only reason it might not is that there are other viable format holes in Detroit (Soft AC and Variety Hits). There don’t seem to be any viable format holes in LA.

Audacy owned all-news outlets on analog FM (in addition to AM):
San Francisco
Philadelphia
Chicago
Los Angeles

Audacy owned all-news outlets not yet available on analog FM:
Detroit
New York

They also have outlets that are all news part of the day, such as Boston and Dallas, that remain AM only (in terms of analog reception).

I agree WWJ will *have* to come to analog FM at some point, if it is to remain viable. I'm not sure if that means 1 year, 2 years, or 5+ years from now.

Audacy doesn’t own WBZ anymore, that’s been iHeart for a few years now. Also WWJ needs to go to FM ASAP; sometimes I can’t pick them up for shit out here.

It would be interesting if Cumulus made 93.1 WJR-FM and sold off that big AM 760 signal to Audacy. That would eliminate WWJ's signal difficulties at night (by moving from 950 to 760). This is very unlikely and I would imagine that there is a much greater chance of 98.7 FM becoming a simulcast of AM 950's current All News format.

While WJR certainly enjoys more uniform land coverage, it suffers from manmade interference in my neck of the woods no less than WWJ.

In fact, WWJ's signal during the day seems a bit stronger than WJR's at my house.

AM radio's audience is dying, the viability of AM radio in general is slowly dying, and over the long haul WWJ will need to move to FM at some point to remain viable.

The buzzing and fading at night here in Brighton is ungodly. I would love to have J on FM.

But the question then becomes, if WWJ was to head to FM, would Audacy leave the 950 signal alone and just run the programming on both?

Yes, they would in all likelihood. That's what they've done with 780 in Chicago (which gained an FM simulcast nearly a decade ago) and 740 in San Francisco.

I'm a bit surprised AM 950's nighttime signal is so poor in Brighton. In the summer months, that would make sense but less so this time of year.

I'll be fair and say that the home reception is pretty poor. In my 95 BMW it wasn't any great shakes, either. But in my fiancé's 2020 Edge, it comes in fairly well. It's a crapshoot.

Having it on FM would sure wipe away any guesses 😉
