End of The Road for WBAI 99.5fm NYC pt 2
End of The Road for WBAI 99.5fm NYC pt 2
I had a topic on this, before the big data dump on here some time ago. WBAI New York, which has been struggling for years, seems to have taken a turn for the worst.

Easier said than done, if it can even BE done. EMF would pay them a king’s ransom for an Air 1 flagship but the organization will never give it up voluntarily.
WBAI’s staff won a court injunction against Pacifica, but went back to a studio that Pacifica totally dismantled. The station is still simulcasting KFPA in Oakland as a result.

Yup. Pacifica even took out the EAS equipment, leaving the WBAI staff no way to (legally) run the station themselves. It’s amazing how dysfunctional the relationship between Pacifica and WBAI has been for YEARS and they’re both somehow alive. It’s as if the same business ineptitude that has placed the station and Pacifica as a whole in such dire straits is actually what’s keeping them alive, as any owner with even a sliver of common sense would’ve sold the station (or turned in the license, seeing how Pacifica wouldn’t dare sell). I kinda feel like they’re the cockroaches of radio. A nuclear holocaust could end humanity as we know it and 99.5 would still be airing “Democracy Now”.

The irony being that stripping the local content will increase the ratings for WBAI and helps stabilize everything at Pacifica.
Very little is on the side of the former staff: their programming had no ratings (thus preventing them from any hopes of CPB funding), they were a financial drain on the foundation, and they have a legacy of anarchist moves when things don't go their way (which has happened at KFPA, but nowhere to this degree).
Free speech is not really... free.

If Pacifica ever had to bite the bullet and sell (which will never ever happen voluntarily) EMF is the only logical buyer.

LOL. The local staff must be a bunch of crackpots.Myron Falwell wrote: ↑Tue Oct 08, 2019 11:16 pmEasier said than done, if it can even BE done. EMF would pay them a king’s ransom for an Air 1 flagship but the organization will never give it up voluntarily.

Ask not what your country can do FOR you; ask what they are about to do TO YOU!!

Yeah... I'd say that's a safe assumption.

Per WBAI’s Twitter, Pacifica ‘s Board has agreed to restore the station to its local programming. Of course, Pacifica leadership claims that the vote is not legal. What a (not surprising) mess as this drags on. No matter how bleak things look for WBAI, I will never consider them dead or dying until the station is officially sold or taken silent. Even those scenarios will lead to a drawn out legal battle, I’m sure.

When the local staff at the NYC station makes the national leadership looks like conservative business people, you know you are dealing with some fringe left wing crackpots.

You guys know damn well whenever WBAI gets in trouble, some unnamed donor or donors likely stroke a check.
Regarding the national programming known as "Pacifica Across America," much of it (if not all of it) is carried by 95.3 FM, 102.5 FM, and AM 1680 in the Grand Rapids area.

Anybody trying to listen to 102.5 out of Grand Rapids isn't listening to much these days. It's been transmitting nothing but a high pitched whine for at least the past 6 weeks. I'm guessing there isn't anybody at that operation that actually listens to their own radio stations.
