Indy man arrested after gun goes off while swinging golf club at Topgolf

FISHERS, Ind. — An Indianapolis man is under arrest after a firearm he wasn’t legally allowed to possess discharged while he was swinging a golf club at Topgolf.

According to the Fishers Police Department, Anthony D. Hurd Jr. was arrested on preliminary charges of being a serious violent felon in possession of a firearm and criminal recklessness, both felonies.
Police said the incident at Topgolf took place on Friday with officers being called to Topgolf on report of a gunshot. Police said Hurd, along with most members of his group, had fled following the gun going off.

The police investigation ended up identifying Hurd as the responsible party for the gun discharge which led to police arresting Hurd on a warrant on Tuesday.

According to court documents, video surveillance at Topgolf shows Hurd swinging a golf club when his gun went off. Police said Hurd’s group can be seen reacting to the gunshot while Hurd bends over to pick up an object from the mat.

Police said Hurd attempted to keep playing golf and “play it off as if nothing happened,” after the gunshot rang out.

Hurd, along with a few members of his group, then quickly left the business before police arrived.

Court records reveal that Hurd has been charged multiple times in the past for being a serious violent felon in possession of a firearm. Last March, he pleaded guilty to his charge and was given four years of probation with the first two years ordered to be served on home detention.

Hurd was still on GPS monitoring when he visited Topgolf. Marion County Probation helped police determine that Hurd was at Topgolf by tracking his GPS monitor and determining that he fled the business and returned to his home on 34th Street.

Hurd’s violent felon status comes from being found guilty of felony robbery in April of 2010. He was sentenced to six years in prison.
