A Political Question

Post by Turkeytop » Sun Aug 02, 2020 9:43 pm

I'm posting this here, rather than on the political forum, because I'm only looking for information and not wishing to start a debate.

It's probably a dumb question but I have little knowledge of how politics works in the U.S.

Both of your parties have selected someone to be their nominee. But neither candidate has officially been nominated yet. Can a Party decide that the person really isn't the ideal candidate? Can they, this late in the process, decide to, at the convention, nominate someone else instead?

Theoretically, yes they could, because it's regulated by the party's rules.

Has it ever happened? I seem to recall something about Hubert Humphrey in 68.

Interesting. But that goes more to the issue of what happens if the candidate dies or becomes incapacitated.

What I was wondering is, if the party establishment decides, this guy is going to be a real problem as a candidate. Could they draft someone else at the convention?

Not outside of those guidelines, it is extraordinarily rare.

The right needs to stop worry about what’s between people’s legs. Instead, they should focus on what’s between their ears.

So if someone like Bernie had been successful instead of Joe, the party insiders wouldn't say he's too extreme we can't win with him.

All of that wrangling happened in the 2016 primary and this year, but it was done through media manipulation during several state elections.

You may find this enlightening when it comes to a "contested convention."

New York and Chicago were all in with respect to their sanctuary status — until they were hit with the challenge of actually providing sanctuary. In other words, typical liberal hypocrisy.

I wish we would have a national run off, top three precede to final election.

I wish we had a parliamentary system where 5 people ran and we had a run off.
