Florida man arrested for murder claims victim asked him to 'put him out of his misery'

LAKE WALES, Fla. (WFLA) - A Florida man is behind bars after deputies say he shot and killed another man on Thanksgiving.

Deputies arrested 38-year-old Steven Hunt of Winter Haven on Thursday night for the shooting death of 45-year-old Stephen Roberts. They say Hunt gave two different stories in separate interviews after the incident.

A witness called 911 around 2:30 p.m. to report the shooting. Responding deputies found Roberts dead in his Lake Wales home with an apparent gunshot wound to the head. An arrest affidavit says Roberts was found with his arms "bent and pulled up to his chest." Deputies found two .40 caliber shell casings near him, as well as a pillow with a bullet hole.

During an interview, the witness told deputies she and Roberts drove Hunt to Walmart earlier in the day. All three then returned to Roberts' home on Lake Buffum Road.

Later in the day, the witness said she heard Roberts and Hunt talking to each other and saw Roberts holding a handgun. She told deputies she went into another room of the house and then heard a gunshot.

When she ran back into the room, the witness said she saw Roberts with "significant trauma" to his head. She told deputies that Hunt said he shot Roberts and told her the other man "was tired of hurting all day long and he didn't want to hurt like that."

After the shooting, Hunt apparently told the witness to get in his truck and leave with him. She told deputies she drove him to a Circle K gas station in Bartow and believed he threw the gun out the window during the drive.

Once they got to the gas station, the witness said she was able to get away from Hunt to call 911. Deputies later found him at the Pilot gas station across the street.

An arrest affidavit says he "initially stated he went to the Circle K with the witness and was not aware of what happened" at Roberts' home. The affidavit says he then "suddenly remembered he was with the victim and the witness at the victim's residence when the victim was shot."

Hunt initially told deputies that Roberts asked him to shoot him and "put him out of his misery," and tried to give him the handgun. Hunt said Roberts eventually told him to leave and close the door, and claimed he heard a gunshot after leaving the room.

According to the affidavit, Hunt said he went back into the room and saw blood on Roberts' face. He told deputies the man's chest was moving up and down like he was breathing. Hunt told deputies he then picked up the gun and "pulled the trigger two or three times, but the gun did not fire." He told deputies he pulled the trigger again and said the gun did fire but he didn't know if he shot Roberts.

During a later interview with deputies, Hunt gave a different explanation. He still told deputies Roberts asked him to shoot him but said he told the other man he didn't know how to shoot a gun. Hunt claimed Roberts showed him how to shoot the gun. He then told deputies he shot the other man. He also "believes he fired another shot at the victim" after the witness told him Roberts was still breathing, according to the affidavit.

Hunt was arrested for first-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

"While most people in the county were enjoying a holiday meal with their families and loved ones on Thanksgiving day, a senseless murder was taking place in Lake Wales," Sheriff Grady Judd said in a statement. "Our deputies, detectives, and crime scene investigators worked throughout the day and well into the night on this case."

The sheriff's office says Hunt has a lengthy criminal history including 16 previous felonies and 10 misdemeanor charges. His most recent arrest was Nov. 7 for battery domestic violence. He was released on probation last week.

"We are grateful that this violent convicted felon was taken into custody swiftly and without further injury to anyone else," Judd said. "Our condolences go out to the victim and his loved ones."

Why did the sheriff decide to include how pissed off he was that his officers had to work on Thanksgiving. I was waiting for a comment along the lines of "Why didn't he do this on Friday?"

I had to drive through that a few weeks ago it is more frightening to me then downtown Detroit in the mid-80s. These two are the types I imagine when I think of trump voters.
