Several smartphones have FM tuners built in.

You don't even have to sign up for service either... Just buy a used phone and use it as a clock radio!!
I already have a good radio and now I have a clock too. Got one in a Surplus store today for $15.

Bright red LED display with large numerals.

I've already packed it into the geek bag I carry when I travel.

Adapt or die my friend. Happy travels.

I still want to stay at Hampton Inn properties but I'll need to get some clarifiction of the rules.

A friend of mine uncurred a penalty for smoking in a non-smoking room.

I want to be certain there isn't a similar penalty for sneaking one's own clock into a clock-free room and making the room look outdated.

Clocks leave no evidence. I have never heard of a hotel that allows smoking.

A digital clock may emit a low level RF noise that could be detected outside the room. For stealth, I might have to wrap the clock in tinfoil. But then it would be difficult to see the time.

Of course, a low budget hotel like Hampton Inn doesn't provide in-room faraday cages.

Most of the hotels I've stayed at over the past few years still have clocks in them, but I wonder when those will go away. I wonder how long cable will remain at many hotels.

I wouldn't miss cable. I wouldn't even miss TV if they got rid of it. I never watch it.

I keep very basic cable, local channels mostly. When my parents come to visit, I'll call the cable office to turn on the other standard channels and after about a month I'll got back to just the limited package.

Youtube is what I mostly watch but I do watch Anime sometimes through my Roku.

And did those rooms with clocks look outdated to you?

I was traveling in backwoods Arkansas a few months ago. The hotel we stopped at only had smoking rooms available. We went elsewhere.

The rooms were fairly modern overall with flat-screen TV'S and other modern gadgets.

I use a radio. A Sangean ATS 606 is my dedicated travel radio. At home it stays with the luggage. The only time it gets used is when we're at a hotel. It survived a fall from my second story balcony in Mexico.
I also carry Sangean CL-100 clock radio for travel.
