Pay Movie Channels Bumpers and ID's from the 80s and 90s

All the pay channels had kind of unique bumpers and ID's, be it Cinemax, HBO, The Movie Channel, and Showtime.

I always liked this one:

Complete HBO 1983 opening!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i1NKoMN ... hannel=HBO
Boy, that brings back memories. Lots of subtlety in that one....passing over and above the neighborhood theater, and the HBO logo in space rotating like the satellite that carried it.

We were involved in the MDS / MMDS versions of HBO carriage in the early 80s....that 'stargate' effect within that opening would smear if the video was overdriven. Who needed a vectorscope when one had this video running on the TX?

Thanks for the memory.

The box that many broadcasters won’t look outside of was made in 1969 and hasn’t changed significantly since.

I remember these bumpers/promos.

Back before every cable system was the same, and carriage or line-ups could vary neighborhood by neighborhood, where I grew up, the only premium channels we were offered were PASS, Showtime and The Movie Channel. At any given time, we had either PASS and TMC or Showtime only.

I liked when they switched to the round ball myself.

Our neighbors to the north (or south) had First Choice (debut 1983 - later First Choice-Superchannel, later The Movie Network, now Crave), which recycled some of HBO's pre-HBO-in-Space idents used from 1979-82 (with different music).

However, prior to HBO encrypting its satellite signal in early 1986, Canadians with satellite receivers could and did watch the "real thing" for free. In the late '70s, cable providers in Regina, Saskatoon and Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, even "simulcast" the HBO signal on a public access channel; I've heard of other Canadian systems doing the same with Showtime. The Windsor Star even carried program listings for HBO in the early '80s.

HBO had many different variations of the "Starship" ident which all concluded with their own unique musical signature. This one, for example, was the "Family Showcase" version, which often meant something like "Fraggle Rock" would be on next.
