Found this interesting, this is 910 WYLI Parkersburg WV. Not a big town but even by the 90s, CHR on the AM was a bit odd. Kind of unique though. Hearing REM's Bittersweet me and Dishwalla's Counting blue cars on the AM is out there for sure.

CHR station on the AM dial in the mid 90s
Re: CHR station on the AM dial in the mid 90s
CFGO 1200 in Ottawa was another am only CHR at the time. It was 50,000 watts. The last am CHR in Toronto was on until 1995. It was 640 CHOG. From 1992 up until their 1995 sign off, they were known as The Beat of Toronto.

Was that recorded off air? That sounds really good!

This group was a client of mine and they were excellent operations until Clear Channel got to town...CD 94.7 wrote: ↑Thu Sep 19, 2024 12:56 am Found this interesting, this is 910 WYLI Parkersburg WV. Re: CHR station on the AM dial in the mid 90s
Energy 1200 (CFGO) managed to survive as CHR until 1997, and when they finally switched, it was to another youth-friendly contemporary format - alternative rock. It's possible they could have lasted even longer if "CFMO FM 94" hadn't become 93.9 Kool FM in the early '90s, which dealt Energy a lethal blow even though Kool couldn't be "true" CHR due to CRTC regulations. Energy had consistently been near the top of the Ottawa ratings until Kool came along.
730 CKLG in Vancouver actually survived into this century, despite a brief detour into talk radio in the mid-'90s which was so disastrous they switched back to music. Vancouver's first alternative rock station (commercial anyway) was also on AM (1040 The Coast).
I believe 1490 WFXY in Middlesboro, KY was another small-market AM CHR that survived into the '90s and maybe even later.
It wasn't on AM only, but I used to listen to CK105.5 Flint via their AM 1570 simulcast, which I could pick up listenably on my clock radio when I lived in Macomb County. I also listened to 96.9 WBTI through their AM simulcast on 1590, which picked up the WHYT call letters after 96.3 in Detroit dropped them in 1997.

Wow thanks for the info. had no idea so many AM CHR's in the late 90s into the early 2000s.
