50kw Daytime Non-Directional
50kw Daytime Non-Directional
I’m curious as to how far a 50,000 watt non-directional daytime signal would travel on 540 kHz versus 1700 kHz. What would the coverage area difference be?
Re: 50kw Daytime Non-Directional
Years ago, I figured out that with 8 mS/m conductivity, at 100 miles distance, it would take 100 times the power at 1500 kHz to get the same field strength as it would at 600 kHz, assuming the same radiation efficiency, and same pattern.

Below is a link to a short paper discussing this topic, which I wrote for Radio World a few years ago ...Deleted User 16144 wrote: ↑Sun Dec 10, 2023 1:50 pmI’m curious as to how far a 50,000 watt non-directional daytime signal would travel on 540 kHz versus 1700 kHz. great stuff....

The clay soil in the township just to the south of Sarnia has high ground conductivity. 700 WLW from Cincinnati comes in during the daytime on a sensitive radio. Based on a map I saw it appears that 590 VOCM on the East Coast can be picked in SW Greenland if you are close enough to the salt water.

I was at a VOCM remote (by accident) when I was on my way to Signal Hill, NF. This was in the 1980's.
