DX-er alert!!! SE Michigan, 6PM on 8-11

The technical side of broadcasting. Think IBOC is a sham? Talk about it here! How about HDTV? Post DX reports here as well.

Is there a legend anywhere to interpret the meaning of the various colours on the map?
Using the website, directly above and below the map is a horizontal strip legend to interpret the colours,
0=NIL through 10+ =EXTREME
Per Instructions, your browser must have JavaScript enabled to be able to step through and advance the display through the three hour intervals.

In most cases you can go by some approximation of ROYGBIV, or in this case, reversed as VIBGYOR. Violet is cold, red is hot.

R Red
O Orange
Y Yellow
G Green
B Blue
I Indigo
V Violet

Or you can use your decent or indecent resistor code mnemonics to remember it, removing a few missing colors.

Many things, but inexplicably not all, including weather maps and medical imaging colors, follow this convention for convenience and clarity. It's the order of colors in a prism spectrum or rainbow.

Up until the past week and a half, this has been a very dead DX season. Canadian stations usually begin booming in here around June. This year, both June and July were almost completely dead during the entire duration of those 2 months. Now for the past 10 days or so the FM dial has been very alive here, mostly with dx from Canada and a little bit of Detroit and on a few occasions SW Michigan.

I heard WQGR 93.7, licensed to North Madison, OH, in my driveway the other day. I've picked up that station on a couple prior occasions.

Station's TX site is 35 or 40 miles NE of Cleveland.

Crazy conditions on the West Side! Right now I'm listening to 106.9 the Lodge (a Class A station on the Door Peninsula on a short stick) near East Paris and 60th in Kentwood!

Some other highlights:
- One of the Eagle 101.5's has been in (if I had to guess one, it would be the Manistee Eagle as 97.7 from Manistee is in)
- 99.7 Duke FM and Maverick 106 (both classic country stations; Duke is from Sturgeon Bay while Maverick 106 is from Da Yoop) were both in with RDS in the car
- 90.5 K-Love from Sturgeon Bay is destroying WKAR with RDS on my Sangean ATS-909X2!
- 105.1 the Goat from northern Door County (also a Class A) was showing RDS in the car

Holy crap...that is just wild.

I wonder if Razor 94.7 was receivable at the time in the G.R. area?

I bet 101 WIXX was receivable.

I’m getting WLEW-FM from Livonia. It’s fighting with 102.1 The Edge from Toronto.

WIXX 101.1 has been a perennial for decades, if you can null out WRIF, under fairly normal conditions, even in Eastern Michigan North of "WOMC" (acronym for Wayne Oakland Macomb Counties, for future reference). Obviously, you have to have a beam antenna with a sharp null. Now there's WGRY Grayling, which complicates it.

Razor, yes. WIXX, not really (I may have heard snippets of it; WBFX's IBOC didn't help). However, several other Green Bay stations were in, such as 89.3 WPNE (over WGNB at times), 90.1 WORQ, 103.1 WOGB, 106.7 WKRU, and 107.5 WDUZ.

Even with WOOD-FM being on a backup transmitter, my WLGE reception is still impressive considering it's 6kW on a very short tower (the center of its antenna is only 169 feet above ground) in the same general direction as WOOD!

Dodge auto radio catch last night (Tues. 8/24 approx. 10pm):

WUPS 98.5 from TL by Houghton Lake.
Received in Lowell, MI while crossing the Grand River bridge by the current Kent County Fairgrounds. And for several minutes and miles northbound on Lincoln Lake Ave. through a downpour.

Was breaking up a little, but tolerable, especially given the nostalgia for me to again be listening to "98 and a half FM WUPS Houghton Lake We Deliver the Hits!" from my teens. (Still can't believe they changed their COL to Harrison.)

Google maps helped me determine it was a 99 mile catch.

Cheers! ~~ Statmanmi

Hasn't Canada turned off their Weather Radio stations? Those duplicated many nearby US NOAA facilities, so it might have opened things up.

It looks like you are close to the Longley Rice Fringes of KIH-29.

Environment Canada has turned off some but not all weather stations. We still have one here at London ON. In some rural areas, where the FM band is uncluttered,, they operate the weather stations within the FM broadcast band.

I started out with nothing and I still have most of it.

Probably not considered DX, but I was able to get 97.7 in Sandusky from Almont yesterday when I was coming home from Lapeer.

Back to dxinfocentre.com's tropo forecast maps that bmw posted. This has been a great tool, and it's been fun learning about it. I recognize that is an inexact forecast, but can anyone explain the science behind the pattern of many tropo "hot spots" being centered over bodies of water? For instance, the current shape of an elevated tropo spot is in the shape of Lake Erie, contained almost entirely within the shorelines. Same with a perpetual "red" hot spot over the Atlantic Ocean, dropping strength immediately along the shoreline.

Also, if my current location is in a hot spot, does that mean I can receive stronger DX signals from anywhere, or from within that hotspot, or that signals originating from this area will travel farther?
