How Many Of You Are Going To Participate In The FCC Auction?

Post by Ben Zonia » Thu Apr 29, 2021 1:03 pm

How many of you are participating in the upcoming auction, on July 27, 2021?

Any of you have $10000 to $45000 burning a hole in your pocket to bid on a new Northern Lower Peninsula of Michigan vacant FM allotment?

Is it a wise expenditure?

I can't figure out why the highest minimum bid is a Class A in the middle of nowhere. Am I missing something?

Does Randy Michaels bid on these often?

Here are the ones in Michigan listed from most desirable to least desirable IMHO:
1. Lake Isabella
2. Houghton
3. Pigeon
4. Onekama
5. Carney
6. Custer

It looks like Randy Michaels gave up on the Lake Isabella allotment. It had the call letters WRAX. The plug was pulled before it was licensed, from what it looks like. Does anyone know more about this? From what it looks like, it was so close to being short spaced, and the fully spaced area was so limited, that a decent tower site was impossible to find.

On what do you base it as being the most desirable? Just the initial bid?

The last facility for WRAX authorized before the license application was cancelled was 250 watts from 15 meters, 49 feet HAAT.

The FCC is smoking something these days. RW reported you could bid on an FM CP as lowe as $750-$1500, but the FCC boys asked for a minimum bid of $50K for an AM daytimer. WTF am I missing? Let's kill AM quicker by making any AM opening cost 25x what an FM CP would cost? Can you believe it?

WRAX was actually licensed, but it only operated briefly if at all. I rank it most desirable as Mt. Pleasant has few radio stations for a city of its size. A CP circa 2009 would've put a 60dBu signal into Mt. Pleasant.

Houghton is desirable as it can be 100kW.

IMHO, the Houghton and Custer allotments would be an upgrade for some existing stations in each area (especially Houghton). The Onekama allotment would be useful for a couple of stations as a simulcast.

Just out of curiosity:

Have their been any AM auctions? Or TV auctions?, since the repack?

There's probably as many as 300 vacant slots in the VHF TV low band, provided they would have must-carry status on cable and satellite.

Yes, the authorized power levels for Low-V TV would have to be increased.

Another possibility could be moving all Channel 5 and Channel 6 stations to other channels, repurposing them as 60 new FM channels up for auction. That could almost pay off the national debt.

Very strange, since it's been policy for many years that the FCC forbids new daytime-only AMs (not to mention that anywhere north of about 43°45'N has nearly zero minority population and soil conductivity is near nil, not at all like the M3 maps would want you to think they will be).

Furthermore, why only 250 watts? When a Class A can have as much as 6K?

To me, it seems that the motive behind WRAX must have been to thwart any construction elsewhere.

Of course, the Dickey Brothers couldn't even fill-out their applications by themselves, did they forget to sign them?
