WCXI problems

The technical side of broadcasting. Think IBOC is a sham? Talk about it here! How about HDTV? Post DX reports here as well.

Time to sunset the AM band. With the interference issues that plague the AM dial it’s reached the point to where it’s actually unlistenable. The 50,000 watt stations are even terrible, WJR and WWJ should move over to FM and shutdown the AM outlets. The sooner the better.
This is what Canada has been doing, shut down the Big AM and replacing it wih the FM signal that barely gets outside the metro areas. rural service barely exists if you have a satellite radio.
There are a lot of things that they do up there that are not good. My friends had to fly to the US for a spinal surgery to relieve a very painful condition, that they would have to wait for years to get in Canada. Etc....God Save the Queen !

So what’s the solution that would ultimately save AM radio? Is there any solutions at all? What will bring listenership back to the AM dial? Feedback please.

Today (July 20):

Inbound commute, 7:30 AM - dead carrier.

Lunch, rather an unsuccessful attempt to buy lunch, 1:30 PM. Playback of Oliver North's testimony.

Commute home, 4:45 PM. More silence, but suddenly, at 5:00, ID into SB Nation Radio. At 5:30, suddenly cut in mid-sentence, more dead carrier.

So at what point did you decide to switch to FM or internet radio via your cellphone.

It was nice to be able to hear AM on long drives across the country. Now with the signals from low power stations on clear channels you can't do that as much.
When you say get satellite radio, I balk at paying for radio when is was always free to listen to radio.
Maybe if Short Wave had some diversity in programming, I would think of finding an old converter to hook up in the vehicles.

I was just looking at the Proofs of Performance done on the Daytime WDEO 990 DA near Clark Rd., North of Ypsilanti. Several Radials were included in the WMVP 1000 Application when they went to a new DA system. This was done to show that the first adjacent signals didn't have prohibited overlap. The Proofs were done by Munn Reese. They show that the area generally West of the new WCXI 1160 array are fairly close to 4 mS/m, not the M-3 value of 8 mS/m. The M-3 value was used to determine the overlap received from WYLL 1160. The deepest null in that direction in the present WCXI DA is on the order of 160 mV/m @ 1 km. Given the actual conductivity, that null could be increased to the order of 400 mV/m @ 1 km without overlapping the WYLL interfering contour. This is equivalent to increasing the "ERP" from roughly 250 watts into a 90 degree tower to an "ERP" of roughly 1600 watts into a 90 degree tower. The conductivities for WYLL were also found to be substantially less toward WCXI, but the WCXI conductivities have not been studied because there was a Method of Moments performed on the DA and not a full Proof of Performance. By letting the nulls out by changing the pattern (there are plenty of towers and options available for study, such as a two tower pattern vs. three), would allow better service to the greater Livingston County, the Fenton COL, and North Washtenaw County areas. A modest power increase may even be possible, though 50 kW would probably be too expensive from a power consumption standpoint with today's AM market realities. Increases in other directions, including to the East and South, may also be possible. Other stations in the state could probably operate at close to 50 kW, but have opted to stay near the 25 kW level, like WMKT 1270, which had a CP for 50 kW nondirectional Days but stayed at 27 kW to save power.

WDEO Proof of Performance Radials reprinted in WMVP application. WDEO is about 20-25 miles from the WCXI site, and the areas traversed by the radials are in areas which WCXI might improve service.

Is THAT where they got the idea for the 486-SX?

Same (x, y, z), different (t)

Neither.
I switch to AM, namely WLEC, usually around the time I pass Monroe, at which point the open path of Lake Erie is only half a mile away.

WLEC has a translator on 93.5, but co-channel WRQN buries WLEC's translator.

WCXI should change its callsign to WCPI for "crappy."

The station had terribly distorted audio around lunchtime today, and then when I was surfing the dial around the 3PM hour, the station seemed to be broadcasting at reduced power.

They are back up to full power now.

It's not just lunch time, their audio sucks 24/7, not listenable.
