Last few times I checked WCXI late at night , 1160 had a strong carrier and just some faint background modulation, maybe spillover from WPON also at the Wixom, site ? Any news about this ? WPON on 1460, had the oldies music going at the times I heard the dead air from WCXI !

A lot of AMs are dead air now throughout the state, and some are off the air. A lot of FMs are off the air.

Is THAT where they got the idea for the 486-SX?

Why?
Some is young radio people who long ago gave up on AM. Some of it is not being motivated to make it work in some markets. Some is the real decline of radio vs. other forms of delivery. Some is neglect. Some of it is engineers and owners not listening to find out if they are on or off the air. Some is the pandemic making scarce help even more scarce.

I believe when the FCC grants a broadcasat license, you are obliged to PROVIDE A SERVICE to listeners in your coverage area. You just can't shut it off and go home at night !!

Last I knew, only AM PEP stations (e.g., Class A, such as WJR, WSM, WWL, WBZ) are obliged to operate ALL hours.

A few non-PEP stations, mainly in smaller markets, especially where median age is high, operate "normal hours" typically 6AM to 10PM or 12MN.

Are PEP Stations still important? or are they now like the old 640 and 1240 Civil Defense stations from back in the day.

I remember the 'Conelrad" excersizes, spelling may be off,
When I worked at WXYZ I saw the relays that changed the transmitter from 1270 to a 1240, Xtal in the exciter and some taps in the other stage coils to tune there. I Don't recall ever testing to see if it still did the changeover, :D

Wasn't too long ago when the old Class 4 stations were 1K day and 250 W at night . But then the rules changed where They were 1 k, both day and night.
I am sure the Idea of better 24/7 operation was the compelling reason for allowing more power at night . Day time only stations are now operating with very low power at night in many cases. Totally dark nights are rare now.
I recall the class 4 Locals were on 1230, 1240, 1340, 1400, 1450 and 1490.

I believe the "class 4" graveyard channels also had to sign-off on accepting whatever nighttime interference that they would get with the jump from 250W to 1KW at night.

When basically all Class IVs went from 250 to 1000 watts Night, the Nighttime Interference Free distance remained the same. The NIF Contour and the Interference both doubled. With twice the field strength, it had a better signal to electrical noise ratio. Many Class IVs had very good signals for 3-8 miles or so, after which it turned to the "chaos" you described. The towers also tend to be in the center of population, rather than several miles away for more powerful directional stations. And they don't have the expense of a DA, and don't have. nulls over urban sprawl areas off the back of the pattern.

When there isn't dead air, their network programming audio is awful, I don't know how anyone can listen to it, as I mentioned it in the Detroit metro post.

Time to sunset the AM band. With the interference issues that plague the AM dial it’s reached the point to where it’s actually unlistenable. The 50,000 watt stations are even terrible, WJR and WWJ should move over to FM and shutdown the AM outlets. The sooner the better.
