Your best ever car radio?

The technical side of broadcasting. Think IBOC is a sham? Talk about it here! How about HDTV? Post DX reports here as well.

It can sound good. Remember the inventor of FM touted the fact you could tell the difference between the sound of a crosscut saw or a rip saw. I think that qualifies as good.
You can do that with a phone...
They didn't have cell phones with near-flawless audio in 1933

Cellphones and near-flawless what? You're not an engineer I'm going to guess.
Yep, I'm not. Thought I shouldn't have said that.

I rent cars all the time, Chrysler has the best radios. Hyundai is near the worst.
VW used to be good.
VW more or less invented the pull-out radio. My sister had a '58 or '59 Beetle with a Blaupunkt that doubled as a portable.
A 59 used Sapphire radios as stock, not Blaupunkt. They were a popular aftermath option.
Those guys are the VW experts... I kinda hate them and their inability to control camber but the radios were neato. The restos for VW of America were all done at my sister's house.

The audio transmitted by phones is really truncated; a severely compressed passband. No bass, no treble and no dynamic range.
Telephonic audio is terrible by design.

Phones often lack bass response, FM tuners themselves do not.
Phones operate in a passband from 300 to around 3.5khz. There is no bass.

What era radios? Sapphire or Blaupunkt? My buddy maintains the vintage VWoA fleet for them.

My current radio is a Blaupunkt MP-76.

AM unfortunately has narrow frequency response, but the FM - it has a "twinceiver" receiver with 2 separate antenna inputs and thus diversity reception (there are actually 2 separate fm tuners built into one). I've had it for years but have never gotten around to connecting a 2nd antenna. Now I'm kinda curious how much that would improve reception.

Wow! That one looks great just by itself! In my opinion, that's a great way of using MDs. I've never seen such a setup to actually RECORD radio in the car

I actually still own it - I converted it into a stand-alone home stereo powered by a 12v source. I don't currently have it hooked up to anything - I mainly kept it for playback of my minidisc collection and for its stellar FM reception.

Bob still maintains them. The fleet remains in Michigan. He fired up a 1954 panel bus today for the first time since 1996. Who does the radio work?

I don't blame you. It would be great for a home stereo. Actually it sounds so appealing, I might get one myself. We do happen to have lots of MDs at the station that go unused so this would be handy.

Dude...Bob moved to Manistee. He retired and bought a home on the edge of the forest.

I dunno' who does electrical restorations, I limited my involvement to repairing a couple of window regulators for them.

He did, I was down at his shop last week. The 1954 VW Barndoor Panel was in the garage. Clark at VWoA still has Bob work on the fleet...

Watch out for the bears.... The Ellis' are "flatland people" as I like to call them and this is a bad time of the year to keep that giant bag of birdseed on the deck. You guys have 500~600 lb black bear in that forest.
