Picked up a new catch for me in northeast Michigan - WHOT 101.1 Youngstown (24.5kw). Driving between Oscoda and Tawas City. Very impressive catch considering how strong it was while driving for at least 5 miles and that the extreme northern edge of its normal fringe signal barely reaches Cleveland.

I was also picking up a lot of stuff from Central and West Michigan, including Traverse City and Lansing.

Major lake tropo event today, since early morning. Basically synoptic tropo (normal land-based ones in as well, such as Q106), but conditions over the water dominate.

In Fremont, all the usual regulars are in at insanely increased strength.

V100.7 has completely wiped out local 100.5 and 100.9 with IBOC hash. No sign of either and both are 25-35 miles away.
99.1 The Mix has wiped out 98.9 and 99.3 with IBOC. Usually there's some IBOC, but not so bad.
Power 92 - in full RDS - is killing 11-mile 92.5's signal and interfering so badly with 92.1 on the car radio that it's unlistenable. Power used to be a regular before 92.5 signed on some years back, and 92.5 buries it many days, but not today.
99.9 BBN blasting and interfering with local V100 at times on the less sensitive car radio.
All of Chicagoland, Milwaukee, and Green Bay (whichever is the strongest on shared frequencies) in with RDS.

92.3, 99.1 and 100.7 in at 45dBu (same as 20-mile WSNX). All the big Chicago signals (93.1, 94.7, 95.5, 96.3, 97.1, 97.9, 98.7, 99.5, 100.3, 101.1, 101.9, 102.7, 103.1, 103.5, 104.3, 105.1 (IBOC causing issues with 11-mile 105.3), 105.9, 107.5, etc.) in at 35dBu, literally all the same strength. Obviously numerous 35-mile Grand Rapids stations knocked out. Escanaba messing heavily with 107.3. Magic in strong on 98.1.

Chicago over Suring on 102.7?

Fun fact: WVAZ is one of very few full power Chicago's I've never heard here (I've even gotten WKSC over WTCM a couple of times!)

V103 is less common here than Suring, but I'm also quite a bit closer to Chicago and it'll come in very well with the usual Chicago stations. I can't hear Suring at all today. It's all V103 with RDS. I've gotten even the lower power Chicago area stations here quite often. But V103 usually can only make it up to Ludington, so you're a bit out of range.

90.5 CBHA-FM (CBC Radio One) from Halifax, NS was coming in loudly & clearly in the Birmingham / Royal Oak area this morning!!! No sign of the usually dominant WKAR-FM.

Also heard classical music on 91.5 FM. RDS provided the name of the symphony but no station ID.

Finally, picked up a scratchy signal on 89.7 FM with RDS of "mainepublicradio.org"

All were logged around 9:45a this morning.

I'm going to have to install a Software Remotely Controlled Radio, compete with multiple switchable antennas on rotators, to eliminate all the industry created and destructive interference of all kinds. I can't hear hardly anything outside the market anymore.

The NCE-FM Band does seem to have the most opportunities lately. The local ones are almost all quite low power and nullable, with a few without HD/IBOC adjacent or cochnnel interference.

I started another thread with this post, but I'm pasting it in here as it makes more sense.

Sun Jul 14, 2019 7:57 am

I live in Brighton, right near the 23-96 interchange. I have a standard Pioneer VSX-D906S receiver in my music room DOWNSTAIRS and this morning, Grand Rapids is pounding in, better than more local stations (Detroit). I even got a decent mono signal on 104.9 from Alma. As I type this I have a solid stereo lock on WBBL 107.3. Also have a solid lock on 104.1, beating WRSR and WOMC, which should be more local.

I am getting z92-5 from Kokomo, Indiana, also. I can't figure it out. Every single GR station is coming in crystal clear in my basement...yet more local stations are hard to get. And here I am getting some kind of hip hop on 93.3, which is harder because I'm about 6 miles from the WHMI transmitter. This is by far the wackiest FM reception I've had since before HD signals.

Especially on the lower end of the dial, I'm getting a stereo lock on ALL frequencies. 95.1 is the only one I'm not getting a lock on. Someone help me out here. I don't get why this is happening.

94-5 The Q is pounding in now.

Now 95.7. I mean solid stereo signals.

This is weird. GR is local right now and Detroit is distant.

I understand tropospheric ducting and e skip, but I would appreciate any and all help on this one!

I'd have to say that you're experiencing just plain ol' tropo. Though I imagine that your Z-92.5 is The Castle here in Michigan as opposed to Kokomo if you just heard "Z-92.5" and not a full ID. It's getting out well tonight.

There is a strong high pressure system directly over Lake Huron that is fueling insane conditions over the lake (I'll make a separate posting on that). While it isn't much of anything inland - I just drove across the whole state and not much more than enhancement - there are some areas that are being pounded with tropo. You seem to be in one of them. When lake tropo kicks in, I can easily get signals from Milwaukee, Chicago, and Green Bay on seek with RDS in the basement with just a portable radio.

You're quite possibly the only person in all Michigan to log an FM by Sporadic-E this year😣

We had plenty of skip over the weekend. All the Maine and Maritimes skip Saturday afternoon and then additional skip scattered around the band on Sunday morning from Louisiana. I was doing coastal bandscans all weekend and it kept crashing my party, which ain't cool! (It likes to hit every time I travel to make bandscans for my project, but then there's nothing when I'm actually at home.)

London, Leamington, Chatham, northern Ohio and even Goderich, ON are all booming in this morning.

91.5 WVMV from Marine City is coming in like a local.

CFCO translator on 92.9 loud and clear in Rochester, Michigan.
What receiver and antenna are you using? I used to hear it, when it was 50 watts, on a MR-80 with a 10 element Archer FM-10. Before IBOC on WDRQ , and the Grand Ledge station on the Olds Tower, WLMI as I recall, CFCO-1-FM, WDRQ moved to the tower that Bob Liggett put up, and WKJF/WJZQ moving, I used to hear WKJF regularly, originally with a Technics ST-G5 Tuner, and a wire dipole in the attic. WDRQ was 20 kW/500 feet from the WJBK-TV tower on 9 Mile Rd. WWTV-FM/WKJF-FM was 157 miles from my RL, in the Geographic Center of Michigan, and the highest site elevation in the Lower Peninsula.

CJOS 92.3 "The Dock" has become a regular catch here lately. About all I have to say about this station is that THE AUDIO SOUNDS OVER PROCESSED, OVER MODULATED, and generally horrible.
